Sounds reasonable to me, but if you cannot easily find someone to agree to this for you, it may just be easier to take advantage of the 30-day money-back policy, if you bought it directly from Corel. If you didn't buy it from Corel, you should at least be able to cite the 30-day return policy as reasonably extending to a 30-day free upgrade policy (possibly paying the small difference, if any, in purchase price between the two versions). The usual problem in these cases is to find a way to communicate with someone who is both reasonable and authorized to approve the upgrade.

I am afraid the only people who can tell you that are Corel support - if you have just purchased and registered X7 you should have a support code to enable you to raise the question with them on the Corel website.

Hi, Guys
Yes I brought through Corel and have just used their support code to lodge enquiry with confirmation of the lodgement waiting for their reply.
I would assume if the link that Brian posted allowes me to pruchase the VSX8 software in AUD then would assume available even though VSX8 is not listed on the Corel Aussie website when I checked after seeing the VSX8 release announcement.
I miss Ulead at least they were a good company to deal with none of this BS free 30 day only support for a product you purchased that discoverd has bugs down the track.
Since the Corel Ulead buy out I wait at least 6 months and at least a service pack release before deciding wether to buy the next version. They took over 7 months to release SP1 for PSPX7 which IMHO is very lax for a supposed industry leading software delvopement company for this type of product.
Corel  seems more interested in take overs than in fixing their bugy releases

Hi, Guys
This is the first response from Corel “Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support. We are currently planning to roll out an automated message about the product. We're in the final stages, you should be seeing the message soon. Hope this helps!”
Which I responded with this is not an answer yes or no with more info on the release of VSX8 Ultimate and they came back with this answer “Currently our marketing team is still fine tuning their offer for VS X8, there are still some rough spots to polish. As of the moment there is no free upgrade or technical upgrade (discounted) to VS X8. I checked what they can offer and there is no offer for free upgrade to customers who bought VS X7 days before X8 was released. Currently this option is in discussion and we have yet to hear from them
To which I responded with the links to purchase the upgrade for VSX8 Ultimate upgrade AU$74.00 which they are quite happy to take your money for.
So it is not still being in his words polished if Corel do not advise on imminent releases then they have to morally provide free upgrades especially if you are able to purchase the new version within 7 days of your purchase.
We don’t even have a Corel office in Australia any longer as there was once and the phone contact number they did have in Australia had been redirected to the US after they closed the Aussie office which is no longer in use and would now have to ring Taiwan which is the Asia Pacific contact details bet they would not accept my reverse charge phone call.
So it looks like unless you are in a country that has an office for Corel then as far as Corel are concerned “you can go suck an apple” Why has the word before apple that you do to a lolly been replaced with stars?
Now to see how they reply to my last comment it is like trying to get blood out of a stone where Corel are concerned.

Hi, Guys
So persistence and shooting down some of Corels claims has paid dividends in my case as just received this response from Corel customer support supervisor.

I'm Robby, supervisor for Corel Support Services. I'm contacting you as your case was escalated to me by Yasser.

We recently had a pre-launch campaign for VideoStudio X8 for customers with VideoStudio X7. This message is available through the messaging service within the program, although we haven't released the program in the general market yet.

Having reviewed your records, I'm glad to let you know that we can grant your request for the free upgrade to VideoStudio X8. I'll be sending the download link together with the serial numbers to you via email. However, since VideoStudio X8 is only available through early buyers I cannot send the download link to you until the product launch next month.

I hope this works for you Budda [sic].

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.

Regards,
Robby
Corel Customer Support Services

So it does not hurt to point out the errors of their ways like the fiasco I had with my Ulead VS10 purchase and the records that were lost for my VS11 free upgrade that I finally received from "Cowpland Research Laboratory" aka Corel so hopefully next month baring that same monkey (at least have those Corel email records copied away) should next month get those links and keys as advised by Robby chalk up one win to the good guys :D
