Cropping cell phone videos shot portrait orientation

It seems to me that this should be a fairly easy solution that I am just somehow missing.

I would like to be able to take portrait orientation cell phone videos, and photos and use them side by side in overlay track, and to do so, I want to crop the black bars on either side

Any suggestions?

Ok, I just figured it out....cropping with a green screen fill colour, and then use the Chroma key.

This frustrated me for awhile.
