Upgrades to X8

Post by carl365 »

For those who recently bought VSx7, will Corel offer free upgrades to X8?

Thanks!

They usually do, but you need to ask them. The timing has to be pretty close though... We can't be more precise than this here since none of us work for Corel. We are all users like you who volunteer their time to help other users.

Thanks Brian, I'll keep a eye on X8 and see how the reviews here turn out. Actually I'm so new to vid editing (3 weeks) I shouldn't even be thinking of upgrades and such.

If you can, the one and ONLY reason I would suggest you upgrading to X8 is that you would get 45 days access to http://www.studiobacklot.tv/
It seems that Corel has leveraged their Pinnacle connection with Paul and added VideoStudio too.
The reason why I say this is because Paul Holtz produces (to me) the best training videos. You would get up and running in no time. I've already watched the ones for X8 there and they are great. He will be adding more too. Nothing hard or complex and you will have a video up and going in less than 20 minutes. From there, you can experiment and expand your knowledge once you have the basics.
I subscribe there (I'm mainly a Pinnacle user) and the tutorials for Fusion and Davinci Resolve are great. There are motion backgrounds, and other assets you might find interesting.

IF you don't want to go X8, you can still try the site for 7 days free access.
Me? I subscribe a year at a time. I use motion backgrounds and animated lower thirds all the time. There is plenty there, and for me, the cost was nominal.

And no, I do not work for Paul. I just think what he offers in one place is exceptional.

I purchased X8 and see no link or promotion code or anything that would give me more than the 7 days free access that anyone can get. Where do I find this information?

Do you not have a new icon on your desktop tanguero (see below) to take you to the VideoStudio log-in

but I have to say TonyP despite your constantly singing the praises of studiobacklot I was not at all impressed and could find nothing at all of interest to me as a VideoStudio user - certainly not enough to make me want to subscribe to it - perhaps you could get onto your friend who runs it and tell him to get moving if he expects to get many VideoStudio users on board.

I now have 36 days left on this Studio Backlot and there is nothing shown that interests me. It is all basic stuff. I have used Gripps in the past and found his explanations both useful and interesting. Brian's explanations of the more interesting applications are both practical and useful.
I will definitely not be subscribing to this site.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

@Brian, it depends what you are looking for. Motion backgrounds? Plenty. Music? Yes. Lower thirds? Yes. If you have the free versions of Davinci Resolve and Fusion (which I do), training. Without a doubt. Fonts along with other "stuff". Thinking about getting a 5DIII? Training for that. Want to see what the fuss is about with After Effects? FCP, Media Composer? There are many tutorials there, all in one place.
Subscribing depends on your particular needs. I use motion backgrounds in a lot of the work I do. So, instead of hunting the web for free ones (those are the best, yes?), they have a bunch here to take. That alone is worth the cost for me for a year. I've used some of their royalty free music. Scorefitter in X8 is midi. Smartsound is what I prefer using.
I went back to the States to visit family and friends. My wife's first visit. I took 2000 photos. Of course, people wanted to see what we did when we got back to Poland. Thanks to Studio Backlots, I was able to put together a slide show (with pan and zoom) with 100 photos in 5 minutes. Saved guests hours of being tortured looking at individual images.
If you are a new VSP user, and just purchased X8, training and use of the place for 45 days for free. You can't beat that. So why not take advantage of it?

I don't know anyone who runs the place, so I have absolutely "zero" input. I subscribed (yes I paid, if I knew someone I would not be paying) because there was a lot of info there for "me". $55 for the entire year (or $4.60 a month) was cheap for "me". Also, it's support.
I will concede that at the moment, there is more "stuff" for Pinnacle users. ClassOnDemand has been making training videos for Pinnacle products for ages. But with Corel now on board, I am sure that VSP specific training will increase. Either that, or he will lose potential subscribers.

So tell me, and I will email Paul Holtz, what would be of interest to VSP users? You never know what might show up!
Let everyone add their thoughts. You don't know until you ask.

Nothing interests you. Like what specifically are "you" looking for? The tutorials are basic. They are geared to get someone up and editing. Gripps is good. I have several of his youtube tutorials bookmarked. The tutorials by Paul Holtz are practical and useful too and to "me" just as interesting. I guess you have no use for motion backgrounds, music, backdrops, green screen, Davinci, Fusion, learning 3point lighting along with how to properly light for chroma key and lighting control, virtual studio effects, et al, so yeah, the site would not benefit you.

Now, while it may not benefit "you", it might benefit others. So people who buy X8, enjoy it for 45 days. After that, you don't have to stay there.

Well what would interest "me" is at least one tutorial showing me how to do something in VideoStudio that I do not know how to do.

Even for a new user I see nothing that cannot be viewed for free on Youtube - why would anyone pay - time will tell.

There is more to the site than just training, yes? And if you get 45 days free with X8, is there a problem with that? FREE without having to wade through all the youtube videos trying to find one. Also are supplied all that you need to make your first video. Everything in one place.
Basics. Of course, basics would not be the ONLY reason if I CHOSE to subscribe. There is MORE to the site than that. I posted some of it above, and they are not related directly to VSP.
As for a tutorial showing you how to do something you don't know how to do, what would that be? You've been around the "block" a few times and know what you are doing. There are some that are just getting started that might need a little hand holding. Corel thought enough of this site to let them do their training for X8. But as you said, time will tell.

Well Mr TonyP you really show yourself to be strongly biased to this site. You claim no personal interest but this is now clearly untrue. Why show so much support for a site if you have no personal connection? Very suspicious.

Corel have always supplied basic tutorials with their software and these are free as are the super tutorials from Brian and Gripps.
You seem to be spending a lot of time attacking anyone who suggests this site is not worth the money - why should we pay if there is no value to us Corel users who have "been round the block" a few times - how insulting. I suggest you "declare your interest" or keep quiet.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
