PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-run
Hi everyone,
I am still using PSP X on Windows 8.1 Pro.
There's a new problem I experienced today!
My PspScript files are not automatically running in PSP. When I double-click them, they open an instance of PSP X, but nothing else happens.
I have been using the SAME script files on my Desktop PC which had Windows 8 and same version of PSP and double-clicking the file would open the graphic I wanted it to open and add names to it (to make signature tags).
I checked the settings etc. on my PC and this laptop, and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.
The "default" program in both devices to open PspScript files is PaintShopPro.
The ONLY noticeable difference is the icon of the file!
On my PC, it appeared as a round wheel (like the Settings icon) on a plan white rectangle. On my laptop, it appears as PSP X's icon!
Anyone able to help at all?
Please!!!!!!!

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
I never double-click on a pspscript file without having my PSP open since i use the Script toolbar.
I can hardly imagine why i would use that process myself.
I wish i could help.

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
After days of Googling and basically posting this question everywhere, I found a solution that I tried and it worked.
ALL I had to do was check the Registry entry for the PspScript file.
The one on my laptop had the (Default) entry as pspscript_auto_file, and the one on my Desktop had (Default) PainShopProX.Script.
I changed the one on my laptop to PaintShopProX.Script and they're running!!!!!!
Even the icons on them are back to what I used to have on my Desktop.
I'm very happy.
Posting this here in case it helps others!
(Or maybe I'm the only crazy person who double-clicks the Script files, and everyone else apparently runs them directly from PSP) lol

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
Your method of double clicking a script seems to be an unusual way of using scripts and opening PSP which I am guessing is probably why you have not had many responses.
I am also presuming that you have some specialist script at work and that you either have his script on your desktop (where others have their PSP icons or in some easily accessed folder.
Do you do this with all scripts?
I tried double clicking a script from my scripts trusted folder and had a message requesting me to identify the program to open it.
I right clicked and had PSP X2 open the script and yes that did result in opening of PSP but then an error message of "The specified file cannot be identified as a supported type"
I would conclude that your script must be specific to one particular file which stays in the same location so that the script can open that file in PSP and act on it, as usually scripts are general and do not call up any definite file for acting upon.
So you are probably managing to have PSP open with a file present and that script acting on whatever file is present.
Seems a rather awkward way of opening PSP and I cannot see what advantage it has over opening from the desktop shortcut or right clicking a file when browsing and opening in your choice of PSP.

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
I replied to your comment in the other forum, hartpaul.
I do not want my scripts to open PSP... I can do that by the usual method of opening programs.
I just want my scripts to open my tag, add names to it, edit the names and save the tag for the 400+ names I make tags for in 6 different forums.
Sometimes when I've made some tags using the script and uploaded them and posted them for my requesters, a couple of more people join the list and then I have to re-run the script for just those 2-3 names.
Having the option of double-clicking and opening the correct script, which opens the correct tag and does what I want it to do was a blessing for me... because for re-running the script for just 2-3 names, it seemed too much of an effort to go through the thousands of scripts I've got recorded and look for that particular one.

.
Tell me if I'm wrong.
You double-clik on a specific script.
PSP opens (you say the script doesn't open PSP but it is impossible), loads a specific image (everytime the same image), applies the script on it, saves the modified image with another name (which name?) and closes.

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
You're not entirely wrong Jean-Luc,
When I double-click the script, it launches PSP, loads a specific image (not every time the same image, but the particular image that the script is recorded for), applies the script by adding and editing names on it and saves the image with the same name.
For example, if I want to write 'crisps21' on my image, it will open PSP, open an image, add the name 'crisps21' to it, edit it to my liking (like adding inner bevel or shadow to it) and save it as "crisps21.png" or "crisps21.jpg" depending on which script I'm using - the .png version or the .jpg version.
I don't know WHY people are finding it unusual. I have been doing it for 6 years plus!!

I never said the script doesn't open PSP. In fact, my initial post says that every time I double-click the script, it will launch an instance of PSP and do NOTHING else.
I wanted it to open PSP and do all the other things that I just told you it did!!
I fixed it in the Registry editor and now it works like a charm!

You're right, you never said it doesn't open PSP. You said this "I do not want my scripts to open PSP" which I think might have been misunderstood.
I won't lie, I've never heard of opening PSP with a script, but I have heard of using Scriplets. A scriptlet is a special shortcut that runs a script on any image that is dropped onto the shortcut. But it's not often discussed if at all.

But I don't understand why to create a script which is applied only once on each image (because it applies a modification and saves this image with the same name).

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
English is not my first language, that's probably why I'm unable to explain myself really well.
OK, I'll start from the beginning.
I make "tags" which are those images that people use as signatures in forums etc. The tags I make involve use of scrapkits and some artist's work as the main graphic (called a tube).
Now when I'm done with the tag, I put it up on offer in the 4-6 forums I belong to and LOTS of people request that tag.
I run an Always List in all those forums which means ANY tag I ever make will be made for all those people on my list in all those forums.
The total number of names I have in my Always List from all those forums are 400+
For EACH tag I make, I have to add 400 names to it!!
So the script is not for just ONE image to save as ONE name - THAT would definitely not make sense!
So for each tag I make, I record a script that adds the name to it, edits the name and saves the tag. Then I run the script and it adds all those 400 names to it and saves it.
NOW does it make sense WHY I wanted the scripts to auto-run?
The script would still make those 400 tags if I chose it from the drop-down... BUT I've been making tags for nearly 7 years and have made 2000 unique tags in this time period and have a recorded script for EACH one of those so my drop-down is neverending and I hate searching through it to find the right script to run!
PHEW, I hope I make sense this time!!!!!!!!

Re: PSP X, Windows 8.1 Pro - PspScript file does not auto-ru
Hi crisps21,
English is not my native language. I'm French speaking.
I understand you need an automated task but I still don't understand the process. I think it is clear in your mind, of course, but something is perhaps missing in your explanation. I understand that the saving process is recorded in your strip but I don't see how the different 400 names are changing the name of the saved tag.
Best regards,
Jean-Luc
