VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
VS Pro X7 (17.1.0.47) gets the "Stopped Working" message when attempting to load one of my VSP files.
This always occurs on the load of this one particular file.
There are two associated errors in the Windows Applications Logs that are always the same:
Application: vstudio.exe

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
krank... as Jim said at the very beginning, he has version "VS Pro X7 (17.1.0.47)" -- and in VS parlance, the 1 after 17 indicates he already has SP1 installed...
As for his specific problem, I can't really help since we know absolutely nothing about what might be in that one project which causes the problem. But since all other projects appear to work fine for him, we can only speculate that there is at least one thing in it which Video Studio does not like....I would hazard the guess at the outset that it is probably at least one corrupt video clip in the project. But we have no further information to either confirm that guess or point in another direction.
I also have to add that though Jim has kindly included those full error reports, none of us here work for Corel, so cannot interpret the details.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Indeed it's difficult to help here, as HerDocdll.dll is one of the core dll's in VS and is called by many different tasks.
But Jim said that .net recently was updated there.
Well... it's well known fact that updates can get you in troubles sometime.
Jim, try to zip your VSP and upload it to a sharing site.

Thanks for your replies.
The VSP file has been uploaded. Download the file at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1ip1v ... sp=sharing
It quits with 0% of the fifth or sixth file it is trying to open. I haven't been able to figure out which file it's trying to open that may be causing the problem.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Sorry Jim,
same here - crash (in XP it even do not report why...) . The vsp is of NTSC drop frame , 720X480 .
I tried to fiddle with it a bit but I shoot in the dark, I think it include a burn segment which I have never used in VS
Are your "working" vsp's have it also?

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
I don't remember doing anything different in that particular VSP. There are four files, all using the same library, and the other three work. The only place where I have played around with animation is in one of the ones that work. It's possible that I tested building a DVD in the failed one, but I think I did that in a separate vsp.
The thing is that this problem is absolutely repeatable, so it should be possible to find a way to recover from it. If I can find out where it's failing, or how to fix the vsp to skip the problem, it would save a lot of work. I have a few days before I will have to reconstruct the vsp, but it will recover a few days to do it. (It's about 30-45 minutes of highly edited video - probably about 200 cuts.
Thanks.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Hi Jim
We have had a few reports of similar problems in not being able to open VSP files.
Unfortunately we have not been able to help, we cannot read the VSP files content, I can open using Note Pad but although shows some details, most is junk to me.
Like Asik I have tried opening the VSP but crashes my program.
If we could open the project we would not see the content / clips, but will receive a re-link.
After testing others I came to the conclusion it was a VSP file problem not its contents.
However if you say its repeatable….are you able to upload your files to a sharing site for us to construct the project.
I just don’t know what else to suggest other than contacting Corel Support, maybe Corels Facebook could help.
If you have a time limit in completing the project I suggest you start your new project?

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
We do not have any tools to reconstruct a vsp.
All I see inside is maybe one m2ts file and one WAV but dozens upon dozens of png's.
The file crashes right after calling the m2ts and the wav.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Trevor, I'm sorry if I was not clearer.
It always crashes on open in exactly the same place. It does not seem to be content related, that is I can't find any corrupt media in the library. It was created by vspx7. I tried copying the file to see if there was an I/O error. No errors and the copy does the same thing. I have looked at it in EditPad which was not useful. I have reviewed the video clip which is an m2ts of an earlier version from Nero 14. It plays fine in VLC and the vsp that is causing the problem is probably four drafts past that clip, i.e. it was modified and saved and reopened several times before the failure to open.
I also disconnected the import clip from the library before opening, and it still crashed at the same place before getting to the point of relinking.
Since I don't know what happened, I can't recreate the bad vsp. It would do no good to upload the project.
The bad vsp causes the same (?) crash on the machines of those of you have tried it. That means that one of the developers should be able to find out exactly what is coming in that vsp17.1 doesn't like and maybe from that figure out how it got out there.
I consider it a MAJOR problem that VSProX7 doesn't keep backups by project instead of one automatic backup of the current project that gets lost if you open another project. (At least that seems to be what is happening - the manual isn't very clear.)
I'm not really sure what to do with it. I was sort of hoping that Corel monitored these groups.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Hi Jim
Unfortunately Corel do not monitor there forums, we are volunteers trying to help others, and like you use the programs.
Corels Facebook may be the best way in contacting Corel, I assume your free support has expired?
I did note some different vsp names when viewing the details in NotePad.
LayoutCutStitch.VSP………. I assume is the name of the project, there were others….
PRJ_CREATEDISC.VSPTEMP.vsp………… this has been created during Share Create Disc.
For future work---- I would advise that from your main project you first Share -- Create a video file that you can play…..
Rendering the project using the same settings as your M2TS files (LayoutAndCut.m2ts)
That will create a new video file of your project, use that file to burn a disc.
PRJ_CREATEDISC.VSPTEMP.vsp will be here, it may be this vsp that is corrupt??????
C:\Users\Jim\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\17.0
First try opening that project, it may be a copy of the original? (providing you have not over written it??)
Finally try moving that VSP to another location, then try opening LayoutCutStitch.VSP
When you edited the Disc menu did you add any personal files, then maybe moved or deleted those from the hard drive?
Video Studio Auto Backups are saved in cache, to be used should the program fail, on running the program again will / should give the option to open recover the failed project.
It does not update the original project VSP file.
Even so if the vsp is corrupt, any backup will save the corrupt file.

That item:
PRJ_CREATEDISC.VSPTEMP.vsp
is the probably the answer. I may have imported this project into the DVD test I was doing. From the name, it looks like something automatically generated by default (I didn't override it because I wasn't planning to keep it). The VSPTEMP.vsp begs to be interpreted as "you have decided to save a temporary file." That file may very well be missing or corrupt.
But I suspect I may have got it backwards and might have made a disc test out of this project, removed the menu system (gone back to edit), and then saved it.
In the first case, the question is: "how did the test project name wind up inside an imported file?"
In the second case, the question becomes: "How did the following sequence of actions cause this error?"
But it does tell me something. The upside is that the m2ts I have dated a week before the disc test is probably the latest version generated before the disc test. So all I have to do is reconnect the chapters and then check everything very carefully. The downsize is that if I wanted to change something on an overlay track or on the background track, it probably can't be done without going back to the original footage.
Thanks for your help.
Jim

- Finish editing on the "edit" tab.
- Save project.
- Select "share" tab.
- Select output to optical disc.
- Create menus. (Opens menu application)
- Close menu window. (Close menu application without saving)
- Select "edit" tab.
- Save project.
- Close VSP17.1.
- Open project and crash.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Hi Jim
Workflows……….
1 / Finish editing
2 / Share Create Video File, if burning a DVD then use Mpeg options to render a mpeg2 file
If for Bluray or Avchd then use same as first clip or Bluray options.
Play the file to check quality
3 / Start a new project, Share – Create Disc , Add media Files Add Video, use the file created above.
4 / Create Menus
5 / For DVD choose to Create Iso Disc Image
6 / Play using VCL Player to check quality
7 / Use Tools Burn Disc Image iso to burn the file to disc.
At least if the burner module is causing problems it does not corrupt the main edited project.

Re: VideoStudio Pro X7 Stopped Working - bad VSP file
Hi Trevor,
Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to create a DVD only to find out that VSP17,1 thinks my discs are too full, particularly my C drive.
Do you have any information on or can you point me to information on HTML5 projects? The documentation for this product stinks (my professional opinion) and the tutorials are designed for beginners. (I do technical writing and training videos and the pdf manual and some of the training videos leave me wanting to pull my hair out. Nero at least had reasonable documentation, but lousy features compared to corel. Corel has good features with no information at all on how to use them.)
Thanks.

Hi Jim
If you are running out of disc space then that could be the reason for all your issues.
HTML5, I have not used those projects, but a look at the User Guide (PDF) from the Help menu seems to give a bit of info.
Corel also have a YouTube account with many tutorials, maybe HTML5??
