PSPX4

Post by colanglo »

I'm running PSPX4 on Windows 8.1 and I have nothing but trouble out of it. It randomly locks up after I work on 8 to 12 images. When I try to use the crop tool it leaves me with a small square in the middle of the screen. When I have to close it out it will NOT reload until I completely shut down my computer. If my computer has a pending update of any kind my PSP will NOT load at all ... this is unacceptable! I can not work on senior photo's 8 at a time then restart my computer .... no one can work like that.
I deeply appreciate any and all useful help and suggestions.
Thanks =)

You didn't say whether or not you had installed the PSPX4 updates-http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/support/ ... sion-tab=3

First try this- You should be able to right click on the Icon that launches PSP4.
If you get a menu, then click on properties. You may see a tab there saying compatibility.
If so tick the box where it says use in compatibility mode, then select the OS you knew it worked with. Click apply, then ok.
Right click again on the Icon of PSP4 and select run as an admin.
See if that helps.
Also, did you try to install in Compatibility mode- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ ... =Windows+8

Before trying uninstall, reinstall, see the thread at top of this forum for instructions- Clean Up Utility can be downloaded here, restart PC after uninstall- http://howto.corel.com/index.php/Corel: ... 0up%20tool

Also, Microsoft.net framework 4.5.2 update has caused mayhem for many digital imaging software titles, if you have it, uninstall it, it's not necessary.

Lastly, if you can't get it to run, call Corel by phone, talk to sales & tell them your problem and they may give you a discount on upgrade to PSPX7- I find the 64 bit PSP available now significantly faster and worth the money.

What rondo said.
But X7 is NOT! a good investment right now. It's full of bugs that are showing up here every day. It's not a good impression of what is normally a great program.
Hold off till X8 is out for a while and we see how that is or try to get X6 which is the first 64bit and works reasonably well.

Toshiba Laptop S70tB. Windows 8.1 Microsoft.Net Framework 4.5.2 Installed.
PSP X4 version 14.3.0.3 (SP 1, SP2, and SP3 installed).
I loaded 13 images from a desktop folder in windowed mode and Edit mode.
Selected the Crop tool, cleared the crop and made different crops on each image and applied. Then clicked the Save button to save back into that same folder.
No problems at all, no hangs (so far) no small grey square in the middle.
So it will work and no compatibility mode either. I also have PSP8, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7 all fully updated and working (again so far) .
Before trying a reinstall, make sure that you try resetting to default. You can do this first with the crop tool (Down arrow beside Presets and Reset to Default Botton), if that does not help, then reset whole program (Hold down Shift key as you double click to start X4 an answer Yes to go back to installed defaults).

Also do tyou have any other things added - extra picture tubes , brushes , plugins which may contain faulty programs scripts etc. Check--- This PC > Documents > Corel PaintShop Pro > 14.0
Folders Brushes to Workspaces. On a clean install and only doing those crops the only folder that contained anything was Presets with Preset_Crop_Last Applied.PspScript .
If anything else there you don't have to delete them, Just copy that 14.0 folder to your desktop and thn go back and delete all the other items in each of the folders.
PSP reads these folders when you use various tools and if something is corrupted in any of these when it comes across them it may cause problems.
Also find your Plugins folder in your Program Files (x86) (check in File Locations to see where Plugins are installed.) Do the same for those as well. The idea is to take your X4 inatallation back to new and check if it works then. If there are still problems then the installation may be corrupted and you may then need a new install.
If it works properly then slowly add each folder's contents to the correct places and keep testing to find out which item cause the problem. Bit like a detective series. Find the culprit and delete!!!
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Colanglo:

Before doing anything else I suggest you try resetting X4. First save your workspace and other custom stuff. Close X4 and when restarting, hold the shift key. It will ask if you want to reset and all that.

If your program is not closing (you say you have to shut down the computer to restart), after exiting the program and it won't "reload", start Task Manager and end all X4 processes. Many have encountered this, that it takes some time for some of the processes to stop and the program will not start until some of them have finished.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to get started trying these things right now because my PSPX4 just now locked up again and I had to shut down the computer to get it to restart.

I tried to do the updates and received the red X message "No update of your installed software is required at this time" ... so that's one thing down.

Have you tried an uninstall using the clean up tool in this thread http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=52337? I saw the other suggestions in this thread of how to uninstall.

Well, I've done all the things that have been suggested. I reinstalled PSPX4 and it wouldn't even load. I have been using PSP for YEARS and this is the first time I have had any trouble with the product. I did all the updates for the video drivers. I know this is going to sound stupid but every time there's a Window's update PSPX4 will NOT open up until AFTER I do the update. Is that not the strangest thing!? I use PSP on a daily basis ... when it works. I'm at a complete and total loss. At this point I'm thinking trash it because it's useless.
I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm working on a 5 month old HP Pavilion 21 with a touchscreen running the latest Windows Version. I sure do appreciate every one trying to help.
