What I need to do is open the files and simply save them as a more compact file type (jpg, etc.) to save room in an AutoCAD drawing. Any thought or recommendations? Thanks!

Tiff File Errors
Hi! I have downloaded TIFF files orthophotos from a site, each is roughly 40-50 MB. When viewing the files with the Windows Photo Viewer they look like they should. However, trying to open them with Paint and/or any other program gives an error. The file will open in PSP x7, but the image is jagged and everything is green... I'm assuming it must be some odd TIFF file type? I've never had a file that PSP couldn't open and edit... I've searched and searched but can't find anything to remedy the situation. I'm stumped!
What I need to do is open the files and simply save them as a more compact file type (jpg, etc.) to save room in an AutoCAD drawing. Any thought or recommendations? Thanks!

I am sorry but what is "orthophotos"? Or was that a type?JonathanEngr wrote:Hi! I have downloaded TIFF files orthophotos from a site, each is roughly 40-50 MB. Could you make the photos available for download?

Re: Tiff File Errors
Hi! Sorry... an orthophoto is simply a special type of aerial photograph that has been corrected/adjusted to take into account the curvature of the earth (so it can be stitched together with other photographs). A good example is Google Earth--the images showing the terrain are orthophotos. They can be any image file type from BMP to JPG to TIF and so-on.
I am uploading one of the TIF's to my dropbox at the link below. I only have 256k upload speed, so give it some time (the photo is about 40MB in size). Thanks!

Re: Tiff File Errors
I do know that sometimes PSP attempts to open the image in RAW format if it thinks the TIFF is a RAW file but that usually opens up the editor.
If the TIFF supports something non-standard or a little more advanced then it's possible that is the problem. PSP's TIFF support is limited by comparison to some other editors. For example I can open that file just fine in the GIMP.
Other than that, I can't really say why PSP isn't reading it properly.

Well, I have to admit that was very interesting.JonathanEngr wrote:Hi! I work on a Mac, but I do have a Parallels Windows 8 VM on my machine. I tried the following:
1) Tried to open the file with a variety of Mac editors - Elements 13, PhotoLine and Acorn. All opened the image without any issue.
2) Tried to open the file with a variety of Mac non-pixel editors - Dxo Optics Pro 10, CaptureOne 8 and Perfect Photo Suite 8. None could open the image properly.
Started the Windows VM and tried to open the file with my Windows editors:
1) Photoshop CS5.1, both 32 and 64 bit versions, opened the image without any issue.
2) Neither the 32 nor the 64 bit versions of X7 could properly open the image. Oh, they opened it, but the image was colored improperly.
Loaded the tiff back into Photoshop, saved it as a TIF (of course with a slightly different name) and now both versions of X7 could properly load the images.
So there is something going on with that image. Re-saving it with Photoshop solves the problem so it seems to be clearly an incompatibility issue. I would suggest that you file a bug report along with the image and support can probably address your issue. Not now, of course, and that is the problem.
If you do not have too many of these images you could find someone with Elements or Photoshop and they might be able to load each one and re-save it to make them usable for you. Or, even easier, use their batch functionality to do all of them.

Re: Tiff File Errors
Thanks so much! I actually own an older version of Adobe Photoshop (CS2). I'll see if I can locate the disk and install the software.
EDIT:
Well, I found an Adobe Elements disk I've had for years (3.0), it gave me warnings of incompatibility with Windows 7, but so far it has worked perfectly. It opened and converted the files flawlessly!!!!
