The problem of .MOV files with VideoStudio X7

Post by Mark Swanson »

So, I looked back at past discussions on this problem...after I ran into it when I tried to use .MOV files that come from my SJ4000 action cam. They simply won't load in, I get a blank icon instead of the clip and when I try to put it in the timeline it will crash the program.
I can use VS X5 which handles the files just fine....but X7 is much better. Has anyone found a fix? Is there a software converter that I might use, that will not bring down the quality?
Thank you, as always.

Quite a number of us have found that "Format Factory" makes an excellent job of converting videos.

You may also find it doubly useful as it is also a comprehensive audio converter

It is free and available from :- http://format-factory.en.softonic.com/

Just be careful during the installation to read each page as it offers to install other bits of junk which you don't want or need. Otherwise I agree it is a fine converter.

As always, thanks for the help! I did try out that program and I suppose I need to learn to better use it, I did get it to convert a video clip that would then load into VideoStudio, but the quality of it was terrible compared to the original. Either I am doing something wrong or the conversion is really bad, and from what I was told here I didn't think that was the case. It's probably me...by the way, thanks for the warning about all the junk that comes with the download! I dodged that bullet.
I see there are warnings that the program contains an optional codec pack that might interfere with other video software on the computer...any danger there for Videostudio?

I wasn't even aware of the extra codec pack, and tend to avoid such packs because of the potential conflict problem. I only select the specific codec I am after in the pack and install that and that alone.

As for the degradation in quality, what output format did you select in Format Factory, and what were its settings? The conversions I get from it are usually excellent.

Ken, thank you...Let me see, my settings are- output format is AVC(H264) and video size and bitrate I left as default, and 30 FPS. I'm trying this again and we'll see how that goes.
>OK, this time was a lot better, i also turned on the "Encode 2 pass". Are there settings that I should change to try and match the video clips' properties, or will the "default" settings be all right? Are the Default settings the same as the clip I loaded in?
Another thing that is strange to me- When the file is done converting, it still has the .mov file extension. I thought it would have an .avi extension. However, now the clip will load into Videostudio X7 just fine.

The output file has a .mov extension because presumably that's what you chose - if you have a preference for .avi then choose that - it's up to you what file type you convert to

The choices I see are :-

MP4, , AVI, 3GP. RMVB, GIF, WMV, MKV, MPG, VOB, MOV, FLV, SWF

The choices on the first screen are what you want to convert TO - not what you are inputting

Thank you Brian, I did think that the selections there were for matching the file that was being input. I'll give that a shot! And am I correct then in thinking the "default" settings are the settings the file is originally using?
it looks like I am getting very good results now and thanks everyone.

I think the default settings are indeed the settings for the original video, though I have not found a way to change these, nor needed to change them for that matter... I usually select best quality AVCHD as output whether as mp4 or avi......
