Video Studio X7 Ultimate - useless because of little things

Post by Trooper »

Hi together,
i bought the Video Studio X7 Ultimate, but found out that it is nearly useless for me because of some things...

I am making music and making videos about it. the sound records via the cam are not that good, i also record the sound with the PC with my DAW.
those sound records will be overworked and then after placed back into the video
therefore i need to SEE the waveforms of the sound in the parts of the editing software, or i have to push the parts dotzends of time - and listen each time if it is the right place now.
to meet the right place in this way is nearly impossible...
i can not imaging that i am the only one who has to place audio files in the right place of a video ?

the second thing is, that the marker does not "snap in" at the end or begining of a cutted part, so this makes it very difficult to arrange them.

so upset about those things i tried out the Camtasia Software - and everything i missed is there ?
how can this be, a big company like Corel does the simplest things leave away in their software ?

or do i miss something, or work the wrong way, or have to install something?
can anybody help? because it seems nearly impossible to reach someone from corel to ask for...

That's what we're here for - but note that nobody here works for Corel - none of us we are all volunteers

If you switch to "Sound Mixer" you will see the waveforms in the timeline.

to make the cursor snap to the join between two clips - in 'clip' mode put the cursor over the clip - select the clip then click on ">l " or " l<" under the preview window depending on whether you want the beginning or the end

but you do not need to go to the beginning or end of a clip to move them around - just slide the clips along the timeline using the mouse and they will highlight a join - and indeed will only insert at a join.

Indeed, many things in Video Studio are not like other software or not intuitive. Doesn't make it bad software. You have to spend some time on the forum, which is much better than the manual for some things.

I make music videos also, and I edit my audio tracks outside of VS and then re-sync them up. Using the waveforms it isn't hard, and using ripple editing can help keep everything synced up once you have it. There are tricks that you will find as you work with it, I find it can handle most anything I need.

One of the not-useful things about VS is that the manual (printed form with the boxed DVD's, and in pdf as a file in the down-loadable version) is that the image and buttons are described, but there is no detail at all about how to use them singly or combined in creating an image or effect using VS. The locally stored or on-line help topics option improves on that, but not a lot. Experience helps understand the process, and a lot of the buttons and functions are intuitive with a bit of experimenting, but for the new learners with no or little experience it can be frustrating (from a tutor who visits this scenario every school term with beginners in using VS). Our project last term was (a collection of student contributions) to create a beginners DVD for VS that covered the blank spots that Corel does not address.

For good help on how to use VS, you need to go to the Corel discovery centre, learning tab, and review the on-line tutorial videos. They are arranged in basic intermediate and advanced sections, and once a topic is selected, play the topic similar to You-tube. You need a good broadband internet connection for this to work reasonably.

For problems, come to the forum and ask.

Above all, be organised - have a system and follow it - in how you store files on your computer or there will be multiple copies everywhere because you can't find something you know you did. Apart from using up space on your hard drive, it takes a lot of time poking around trying to find past work.
