Uploading footage to Vimeo and YouTube

Post by andyfranks »

Hello. I'd be grateful if anyone has any recommendations as to the best format to output for both YouTube and Vimeo, and also for a best quality, uncompressed version to pass on to people who may re-edit or incorporate it into other footage.

I have edited some footage in VideoStudio Pro X5 shot with a Sony A1E video camera. The footage itself is shown in Properties as:

MPEG-2, Upper Field First
24 bits, 1440 x 1080, 16:9
25 fps
Data rate 25,000 kbps
Audio type MPEG Audio Layer 2 Files
48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Layer: 2
Bit rate 384 kbps

The VideoStudio recommendation seems to be:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

Some of Vimeo's own recommendations are at https://vimeo.com/help/compression

Any thoughts welcome. Many thanks, Andy F

I have used the same default as you and have no problem with my videos - but since it is free to upload to Youtube why not just experiment a bit - try a few different profiles and see which gives you the best result. Delete ones you don't like - keep the ones you do

I made this one on Youtube using that profile - yes I know the cyclists are not to good but they are low quality samples supplied by Corel - just look at the other components
