Sharpening in Aftershot workflow

Post by D L »

I'm very much a novice in photo editing.
Using Aftershot Pro 2, I have been attempting to apply the editing workflow detailed in this link
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutori ... rkflow.htm
Using that workflow, at various stages, I may apply sharpening three times - capture sharpening, selective sharpening (if desired), and output sharpening.
Is this workflow applicable to editing a raw file?
I recently read somewhere, that the order of editing doesn't matter on a raw file. If that is the case, then applying both capture and output sharpening is redundant??? Or are some functions in Afershot Pro 2 pixel-based edits?
For "capture sharpen" and selective sharpening (in adjust layer) I use either the built in Sharpening Sliders, or the Spoilerhead Plugin, "Wavelet Sharpen". For Output I use the Output Sharpening available in the Post Processing settings on Export.

It depends.

Make sure you have appropriate sharpening when looking at an image at 100%.
Apply regional sharpening if that is useful for your image.

The rest depends on the output.
If you downsize in AS queues, you should apply a bit of USM in the queue to counter the softening that results from downsampling.

If you print, you might actually need more or additional sharpening depending on your printing method, paper and output size.
I tend to only apply a bit more microcontrast for printing as my printing program (Qimage) takes care of everything else so I don't need to do much output specific.
I recently read somewhere, that the order of editing doesn't matter on a raw file.
It does not matter for parametric programs with a fixed tool pipeline like AS.
The order of tools is fixed, no matter in which order you adjust them (have a look at the log file, it is shown there....
If that is the case, then applying both capture and output sharpening is redundant???
No, see above.
The sharpening in the queue happens after the image went through the AS pipeline and resize.
Or are some functions in Afershot Pro 2 pixel-based edits?
None.

Correct.
