PSPX7...saving files

Post by ElizabethH »

New to this forum...so not quite sure where to post what.
I have used PSP for some years, progressing through the various upgraded versions...and now to PSP X7. Never before have I encountered a problem with saving PSP tubes/images as PSP 7 or PSP9 format...that is until now.
I am a tutorial writer, creating and writing for my web site...and I need to be mindful of those who follow my work, working with earlier versions of PSP...and so I have in the past, saved all files in PSP7 format to cover most bases.
Following on with PSP X7...I set my "save" options the same, only to find that these files do not successfully open with the earlier versions. A small percentage will sometimes open...but that is a rare occasion.
At present I am having to transport these files to earlier versions of PSP in order to save them and be workable for those who need them. All a pain in the neck when they should work as the system shows it has those options to save.
Is there a solution for this problem or will I have to forget PSPX7 altogether?

I had a similar issue way back when I was using PSP8 as a main and X1 was the new version I was learning. The X1 saves wouldn't open in PSP8. I realize 8 was JASC and X1 is Coral but it was fundamentally the same program.
Lately I've been working between X6 & X7 but also need to be Photoshop CS3 compatible for a number of work projects for the most part I save in PSD. PSD have no trouble between the two.
However I do build logos, Brands, Decal a lot and usually keep them as PSP format. Not real happy with X7 so I use X6 mostly now but I used X7 a lot at first and have created vector based images that I've kept. Up to now I haven't had trouble opening what I built in X7 into X6, touch wood. Older version are a unknown. Though I did use X1, X4 & X6 together for a short time and had no trouble there either. Though X4 was short lived on my PC. Not much difference between X4 & X6 but X6 is 64bit. When working with 4096x4096 images with more then 30+ layers 64bit is king! haha... Even now with 64bit it can struggle sometimes. More so with textures like carbon fiber, Leather and the like.
It in RGB 8bit/channel not 16. PSP doesn't give you that option but I've read here that people are having trouble opening 16bit/channel images. No idea how many layers.

I guess that's no help. No idea why it's a issue for you.

1 I made a colored hexagon on a transparent background and did a Save As and Save as Type was Pspimage. In Options I set it to PSP7 compatible and finished the save.
2. This file loaded into PSP7 OK and from there I was able to Export as a .tub Picture Tube file. This was successfully opened and used in PSP7.

In absence of a description I presume this is what you are doing.
You stated that a small percentage will open . Can you let us know or attach a file that will and will not open for comparison. Is there a consistency or difference that accounts for which ones open and which ones don't?

hartpaul. The trouble is the X7 saved formats are not opening in older versions. X7 do open in X7.

X7 saved pspimage isn't opening in X5, X4 eg.eg.

You need to select Options / Save Options / Version Save As
Here you can choose PSPX4-X7 compatible file or an earlier version such as X3, 12(X2) and so on...

Save As give you a drop down with the list of file save formats. Like jpg, taga, png, psd & so on. Nothing able version compatibility.

The only program I know that can back save is Autodesk 3D Max.

This is not a unusual problem. Photoshop can also have issues with older versions opening later version saves. Not even sure that has a option to back version save either.

To save as a PSP file, I use the method and screenshot of DPainter...and have used this method (SAVE AS PSP 7 COMPATIBLE FILE) for all previous versions of PSP...and it's worked when these PSP files are opened with earlier versions...but not successfully with PSPX7 when saved as PSP7 compatible.
There appears no set rule as to which PSP files are not opening...it's hit and miss.

Do File > Save As
Then change the Save as type to .pspimage
For jpgs png and tif files there is an active Options button at the bottom right which changes depending on the type.
For .pspimage that brings up the Save Options dialog box and a section for Version which gives PSP5 compatible files up to X7 compatible.

hartpaul...this is exactly the steps I take, SAVE AS PSP image....and it makes no difference. I've been there....done that, for all the years I've used PSP...NEVER before has there been this glitch...until PSPX7. Although I know others with this version and it works as it should. Just not mine for some reason!

Elizabeth;
Your font choice indicates the first post your frustrated and are in a hurry to get this fix.! We understand that.

Your second post font indicates that your angry and are shouting at us!

Please remember we're NOT Corel members. This is a user forum though Corel member do at times post here.

We're trying to help you and we've made suggestions in accordance to the information you left in your first post. Nothing was said about the Version Compatibility Save As not working. To be honest I've never used it or even known about it before this thread.

What I understood from that post is the X7 pspimage format wont open in other versions. It's a new problem but not unheard of as I've indicated in a earlier post. So the Save As/Option was mentioned. Your post never said that was what you are already doing and that it's the area that's not working correctly. So it's just another X7 bug and we here can't help you. Sorry.

My suggestion is to continue to use X6 as I have done. Treat X7 like Vista! and through it in the bin! haha....

Ha ha....my apologies..I am not shouting...neither am I angry...just trying to work out how to post a reply on this forum...experimenting I suppose is the word...then not checking preview to see what the post looks like before posting.
I will continue to save in PSP7 compatible mode...using my PSP X5,....then again, I wonder if an uninstall and re install of X7 might work.
Pleased to have feedback though...thank you all.
