Restore

Post by Gramms »

I have been working on a video for some time and I'm just was getting back to it after the holidays.....well now it is telling me that I will have to relink most if not all the pictures and music. Is there a way to restore the video or work that I have done without starting over and recreating everything.

Thanks......

Where did you store all those files and clips? I am assuming they are on an external hard drive... If so, is that drive connected to your computer right now? And importantly, does it still have the same drive letter it did when you first started making the project? I ask since the VS project file will be looking for those clips in a specific place designated by that drive letter.

But in any case, you can either use Windows Disc Management tool in Control Panel ("Administrative Tools") to change the drive letter. Or simply navigate to where the clips are stored and identify the first one in the project timeline. Then when asked to Relink, select that clip, and then all the others should automatically relink at the same time...

Ken,
Thank You for your reply. My pictures and music are on a J drive which is a Simple Tech 1TB external drive. My VideoStudio Pro X4 is on my c drive. You mentioned to select the first clip to relink which I did from the j drive. However, after several minutes only that picture appeared and nothing else was relinked. Not sure what happened that everything seems to have to be relinked. Pictures and Music.

Thanks for any help you could offer.

not sure from your answer whether you followed the correct procedure

when you open the project you should see the 'Relink' error box as shown below

when that occurs make a note of which file it is calling for - then click on 'Relink' then use the browse to window which pops up to locate and click on just the file VideoStudio is looking for - then when you click OK in the selection window Videostudio usually finds and relinks to all the others in the project - and after a minute or so a message should appear indicating that all clips have been relinked successfully

Hi

I have noticed a slight issue in re-linking.

When you open the project the first re-link window shows the location of the first clip requiring a re-link.
You should follow that link, all clips within that folder structure should/will be re-linked as Brians description above.
Take care to find the correct file as the program can re-link to the wrong file.
The file name is also shown on the browse window title.

Only one clip re-links………
If you cancel / close the re-link window, then select a clip in the timeline then a new re-link window will open, now only the selected clip will be re-linked that obviously causes a lot of problems.
Later versions of video studio may have addresses this problem.

If you do re-link a single clip….save and re-open the project to activate the initial re-link window which should be more effective, re linking all in the folder, hopefully.

just browse to wherever the photo is NOW

doesn't matter what drive the relink says - that's why VideoStudio cannot find it - it thinks it is on I

YOU tell it it is on J - that's what relinking does - you browse to the drive/folder where the clip is NOW and tell VideoStudio by selecting it.

if you have an external hard drive attached have you actually told windows to always call it J - if not every time you restart your computer Windows may assign a different drive letter to it and you'll be re-linking again

Hi

I must admit re-linking can be a pain.

This image shows the browser window, here it indicates the actual file name, in this case looking for X5 SP2.jpg
relink_browser.jpg
That image could be anywhere on my computer. The browser window opens to the last used location and that may not be where your images are.

Like Brian says using an external drive may cause some problems.
Make sure the drive is up and running before running Video Studio.
