My suggestion is to download a trial and decide for yourself. We have no way of knowing how X7 will perform on your unique setup and what your likes and dislikes are.
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

I never could get X7 to update so I foolishly bought X8 thinking this would fix the problem. With the first update for X8 the same problem - failure to update.

Utterly amazing that Corel has zero interest in this issue. I've been avoiding the learning curve of a new vendor - but I guess the time has arrived.

I have updated my X7 and X8 by downloading the updates separately, saving them in a folder, then running them manually and they have all worked. Do you update that way or do you let the program do the update download and install?

Thanks JoeB for your comment. I did download the SP1 file and I tried running it from various places: the root of my C drive, the root of Program Files, and also in the Corel folder for X8 - always the same type of failure: can't find some file, access denied, says something is corrupt, etc.

Clearly, the update install program is too stupid to deal with it's own product. My initial install of X8 was a totally standard install using all the defaults - there is no justification for this brain-dead update or the fact that Corel has never offered any help.

I still can't understand why Corel refuses to address this problem of being unable to apply updates. I have X8 but the update problem continues as described before.

Probably because it is not a common problem.
A common problem is one that can be determined to occur regularly with a majority of users. eg it appears as if there is a problem with some Surface Pro tablets and that has been announced in these forums as having been recognised by Corel.

Even on computers that normally have no problems there are many others things that can can upset the installation process. There is a thread on how failure to update the Net Framework can cause problems, a suggestion was made that some firewalls, antivirus, other programs interfere with the installation.
So in general make sure that your computer is fully updated , that your download is not corrupted, take note of any messages and search for the problem mentioned eg you mentioned that
can't find some file, access denied, says something is corrupt, etc.
yet have not given any details about what these messages are.

I have updated my computers on a regular basis and get notifications from programs of updates available.
I have been able to install all of the versions of PSP on 3 laptops and 4 versions of Windows on a desktop computer without any problems. So for me and a number of others there is no problem of being able to install or applying updates.

You also need to ask if a particular update is necessary for you. eg some people had troubles with text appearing in Manage mode and Corel issued a hot fix for that. It was not needed by others.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867
