Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
When browsing files to add to library, a largish file (.MOV, 1.71GB) causes the VS Pro to crash at the moment I select the large file (either by clicking on it or scrolling to it). I can click on any other file in that directory without a problem, but not this large one (as soon as I just select it, i.e., NOT even double-clicking to open) VS will crash. This is on Windows XP SP3 and is repeatable.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
This is probably due to the fact that with a 32 bit OS, you have insufficient RAM available to process the file, I can import into the timeline 2GB files without issue, takes a little while to fully import but that is to be expected.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
OK, sounds like a reasonable explanation. I'll try again after a fresh boot and with nothing else open. I thought virtual memory would have been able to address that (even if it slowed it to a crawl), but my system was pretty loaded, so perhaps that limit was reached and that condition wasn't anticipated by the programmers (to provide a more graceful error message). Anyway, can't complain too much--they are still supporting XP which no one else is doing.
But on that note, do you or does anyone else know of a program that can split my 1.7 GB files into pieces at points I define *non-destructively" (i.e., without re-encoding)? There are 4 scenes in it (with some dead time between each) that I want to split out anyway, so that would be one way around this problem.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
Update: Increased virtual memory, and tried again from a clean boot. I had 2.5 GB PHYSICAL memory available (after loading VS but before trying to open the 1.7 GB file in question), and 9 GB virtual memory available) and still it does the same thing. This time it took several seconds before the Windows crash message came up (but memory allocation was not increasing during this time). FWIW, the Error signature is:
AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 17.1.0.37 ModName: msvcr110.dll
ModVer: 11.0.51106.1 Offset: 0000de08
(which I doubt helps much by itself).

ModVer: 11.0.51106.1 Offset: 0000de08
That indicates an issue with Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, try updating from the Microsoft Download Centre, as support for XP is no longer provided by Microsoft, you would not have been getting the latest updates.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
I don't think that the whole video file is loaded into RAM at least there is not much change in the "used" memory when I add a 13GB avi video file.RobertOZ wrote:This is probably due to the fact that with a 32 bit OS, you have insufficient RAM available to process the file, I can import into the timeline 2GB files without issue, takes a little while to fully import but that is to be expected.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
You are correct, in static mode, RAM used on this computer is 2.52GB (with most programs disabled from startup) and when importing a 2GB file into VS it increases to 2.85GB. Tanguero needs to check if he has the latest updates to Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, I am sure that VSX7 does install MVCR when installing, but it is still worth checkingcanuck wrote:

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
I never had any problem like that. I just loaded now on my XP boot a ~2.7GB file
It plays and scrubs fine,
And I even didn't bother to close other stuff.
Surly when I do edit I run just VS.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
I too doubt that it's a memory usage or file size issue.
I checked the version of the MSVC Redistributable in various ways against stuff published on the web and MS articles on latest versions, and I'm convinced it's the latest. But asik1, since you are also using XP, can you check your [XP Partition]:Windows\System32\msvcr110.dll file version and date? Mine is version 11.0.51106.1, creation date 2012-11-06, size 875,472 bytes.
I'm guessing it's a combination of something about that particular video file (not just its size) along with a subtle bug (in either VS or the msvcr110.dll library). Of course, that doesn't help me include the file in my VS project until I find it.
There is no other problem with that file that I can tell (plays and scrubs just fine in VLC player, for example).

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
The latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (X86) for Windows XP is 11.061030 dated 11/20/2013
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=30679#
Give it a try and see if it solves your problem, otherwise there is something in your file that VS does not like, even though it plays OK in VLC

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
That is the one I have (per information in "Add/remove Programs"). The version number and date I gave was that of the individual msvcr110.dll file in that installation (which has apparently not been changed in the 11/2013 release).RobertOZ wrote:The latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (X86) for Windows XP is 11.061030 dated 11/20/2013

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
My file is the exact the same. I had no options installing this file as it's part of Visual C++ Redistributable and being install with various media software.tanguero wrote:I too doubt that it's a memory usage or file size issue.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
Do you have Format Factory, if so try converting your file to another format, or even just select the same format as the original, then see if the converted file will play in VS

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
Agreed. VS can have problems with .mov files on some systems. Try meg4 of wmv.

Re: Video Studio crashes when browsing large file
I tried Machete video splitter (also not free) but it doesn't come with any codecs! And apparently I have no MJPEG codec for .mov files on my system (the ones in Quicktime, VLC, etc., appear to be built-in). I've also heard the codec packs can introduce problems as much as they can fix them, so I'm wary of doing a large-scale codec pack installation when I need just one. Any suggestion on where I can get just a free MJPEG codec for .mov?RobertOZ wrote:AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 17.1.0.37 ModName: msvcr110.dll

I use Boilsoft Video Splitter, which splits without re encoding, but its not a free program, there are free video splitters available, Google search for them
