Aftershot 2 don't work with .nef made by nikon film scanner

Post by Angelo Lagrotta »

aftershot 2 don't work with file .nef created by the scanner "nikon supercoolscan 5000 ED"
I do not know if it works with another type of .nef file (by camera?) but it certainly does not work if the file is done by this scanner.

Also paintshop pro x7 can not open the same file
must be a problem with all corel's programs

how do I fix?

the fact of not being able to send bug reports directly to the technical support is a real nonsense
corel support is the worst I've ever seen

Hi,

here is the list of supported Cams http://product.corel.com/help/AfterShot ... rmats.html. I don`t think that there is one "RAW" Converter which supports .nef from scanner. Workaround would be .tiff.

Regards

Trucks

Adobe lightroom opens files .nef from supercoolscan 5000 ED

the scanner is not in the list so it don't work
it's the second time that I realize that adobe programs do things that corel's not

Trucks thanks for the reply, but if I want to use the tiff format aftershop would not be necessary: I would scan by nikon scan and then use paintshop

someone knows a solution ?
to buy lightroom except, of course

AfterShot is a raw converter for cameras not scanners;-(
Generate TIFFs in the Nikon software or use VueScan with tends to be better than the Nikon software anyway.

afx, thanks for reply

.nef file is .nef file by camera or by scanner
it's a corel carelessness which should be resolved ( When will happen ... ?? )

for vuescan: I have vuescan professional (latest, 9.4.59, January) and it's good with flatbed scanners (or at least with my hp) buth nikon scan is better: more powerful and more manageable of vuescan despite being older than six years (before 2009)

Nonsense.
A Scanner NEF is a glorified TIFF with pixel data which is already a color image (potentially with an IR channel added).
A NEF from a camera has Bayer pattern data which needs demosaicing before it even becomes a color image.
Just because Nikon likes to use the same file extension, does not mean they are even similar.
it's a corel carelessness which should be resolved ( When will happen ... ?? )
This is not carelessness, but works as designed. The prime purpose of AS is to demosaic raw files.

I didn't know, I thought that they were the same substantially with some kind of mosaicing apply to scanner image

why did nikon that format?
You know if it has some sort of advantage?

Maybe because of the IR channel which would be confusing in a regular TIFF?

Angelo, I appreciate your question because I too use scanner raw files. You might have another look into Vuescan as it can output DNG raw files instead of Nikon's old and dead scanner NEFs.

That said, ASP2 doesn't seem to read the scanner DNGs either.

There are many applications that will, in addition to the Adobe products: XNViewMP does, as well as Gimp and UFRaw among many others. And Vuescan will certainly open them and let you apply correction later in a non-destructive manner. Perhaps Corel can revisit these files as well. They are more valuable and flexible than TIFFs in editing from a scanner.
