X7 Hue and Saturation code for Colorize

Post by Angelica1962 »

Hi all :)

I am from holland and I have tried to search the forum using the keywords as in the subject.
Didn't find the answer so I am gonna give it a try.

In my "old" X2 there was the color picker and when checking the color there would be the KVH in dutch or in english the HSL codes.
With the H and S code I could use it in the colorize box of Hue and Saturation. I used that quite a lot.

However in X7 this is completely gone...I get all kinds of codes and the HSL codes thát are in the codebox don't "fit" into the colorize box that
will only go up until 255
So when I want red, with the H and S code of that red color in X7 there comes blue grrrr
Is there no way to match them anymore ??

I've looked all through the panel en tried all kind of code combinations from the dropdown code menu (HML,CMYK,LAB,WEB etc)
but nope....nothing works......is this really gone ??

Is there another way in PSP to reach the same outcome in colorizing?

Hope someone can help (please not to technical in english haha )

greetz

Sadly, I don't know of any equation to convert the new HSL to match the old.

While I'm happy PSP uses 360 degrees for Hue now, I don't think they properly planned out the change.

This has been a problem for many PSP X7 users.
I have found two roundabout ways to solve the issue.

Using tool Change To Target
Image

1. Choose the desired colour with your dropper tool from the source image
2. Go to the Change to Target tool. Average size for the brush would be about 80
3. Brush over the target image until filled with target colour.

Using Unused Commands

1. Go to View > Customize> Categories
2. Find Unused Commands on the left
3. Find Manual Color Correction on the right
4. Drag the command into your own toolbar for future use
5. Click on the button Manual Color Correction
6. On the right change Source and Target color to desired colour.
7. Hue and Saturation will appear

I have written a tutorial about it in Dutch, but translates fairly well into English, using Google translation, but I'm not sure I am allowed to post the link or mention my site.

Jean-Luc pointed out in another topic that you can simply divide the new Hue value by 1.41 to get the equivalent old Hue value.

Ok. Sorry. Only just registered today and saw the topic about Hue and Saturation. As I get many questions about this from Dutch users, I wanted to share my option.
As of dividing by 1.41..I don't know that the average PSP user finds that an easy option. But thanks for pointing it out. I will try and find the answer on the board.

@LeviFiction, I found the post by Jean-Luc. We are talking a different function here. The one in the other topic is about adjusting H&S in the Materials palette.
The values there differ again from the one I was posting about.
A popular way of using H&S (by Dutch users only?) is in Edit mode, using Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize.
For some reason I haven't worked out yet, the values differ from the one in the Materials palette.

Zantara, I was answering the original question. You're right the topic where Jean-luc and I were talking was different, but it's the same base problem here and that's why it works as a solution here.

The original question by Angelica was on how to get the old HSL values because the "Colorize" command uses the old limit of 255 for the Hue and X7 now represents Hue up to 360 shifting a number of colors. 360 is the standard for HSL/HSV/HSB

So when you use the eye-dropper tool to get the Hue in X7, take that number and divide it by 1.41 on a calculator. That value will be what you need to use in the colorize dialog.

@LeviFiction.
Thank you for your reply. I totally accept that the method Jean-Luc and you pointed out, dividing the number by 1.41 is a good way of doing it, for some.
However, based on my experience with PSP users (I get questions about PSP on a daily basis) I think that the majority will not favour a calculator.
Hence the solution I came up with, after long research into the matter.
Both methods are as good as each other and users can choose their own preference, can't they.
