Grain or Noise in Photos
Is there a plug-in for PSP that can reduce noise like in Lightroom or Photoshop?

Which version of PSP? It's good to give some information to work with.
In Edit mode menu check Adjust. You should find One Step Noise Removal, Digital Noise Removal and Add/Remove Noise. Duplicate your layer and experiment.

In PSP you have a number of choices. First you can go to Adjust/One step noise removal or you can go to Adjust/Digital noise removal. Either will work ok.
But if you want more control I would suggest going to http://www.topazlabs.com/ and download the trial of DeNoise. It will work fine as a plugin within PSP. Even though it may say Photoshop plugin it still will work in PSP.

It's always a compromise between removing distracting noise and losing details and sharpness. If you try One Step Noise Removal, do it on a duplicate layer so if you're unhappy you can just deleted that. Digital noise removal gives you some sliders so that you have some control over what you do and may be a better way to find the compromise that suits you.Anasi wrote:I have PSP 6. I have several denoising plug ins and they all produce slightly different effects. PSP also does a decent job. It is a question of your taste and the ease of achieving what you want. Good luck.
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.

Re: Grain or Noise in Photos
Or you can apply selective noise removal with a brush.
1. Duplicate your image
2. Turn off visibility of the duplicate image and activate the bottom original layer.
3. Apply the noise removal to a level where you are happy with the result, disregard the softening of edges at present.
4. Turn on the visibility of teh top layer and activate it.
5. Apply a soft eraser brush to the areas you want the noise reduced. Should you make a mistake right click drag does an unerase.
This will help to remove noise from large areas where it is most obvious yet maintain the sharpness on edges where you do not erase.

Re: Grain or Noise in Photos
DeNoise is regarded as one of the best noise removal tools. But if you want to use just PSP you can do something similar with the Soften brush in tools when you only want to adjust small areas. This way you can be very precise with what you change. Simple set brush size and opacity and smooth over the noise. Simple and affective on very small areas of noise.

In the meantime you can download a free trial of DeNoise to make sure it's the right product for you. I do like it but I always advise people "try before you buy".Anasi wrote:Ok thanks for the advice guys. I will save up for DeNoise and use the other techniques in the mean time
