Bug. 100% repeatable crash

Post by gregglee »

I haven't used ASP for a while, but got a discounted upgrade bundle offer from Corel so bought version 2. (2.1.1.9x64) Windows 7-64.
Checking APS2 for changes I discovered an odd bug. Has anyone else run into this?

With an image displayed, if I uncheck "impulse Noise Removal" ASP2 always crashes, either immediately or in a few seconds. The only notification is the standard Windows program not responding pop-up window with choices for close, wait, or submit to windows error reporting. Resource monitor shows no activity for ASP2 in CPU or drives. Users\....\AppData\Local\Corel\AfterShot 2\CRASHLOG is empty.

APS2 generates no warning or error message. When restarted ASP2 asks whether to resume or start clean. No other message.

Occurs with raw files from Sony A99, 900, 700, Minolta 7d cameras. These range in size from 24mp to 6MP size.

I don't have other brands to check.

Hi Gregg

I also use Sony but couldn't reproduce the crash. I'm on linux so it may only be a windows bug.
Thanks.

So the next obvious step is trying to disable it...

ASP2 openCL=off does prevent the crash. So that confirms it's an ASP2 bug.
As does the fact that the crash does not happen in ASP1.

BTW ASP2 openCL=off incurs a 40% penalty in batch processing speed.

OpenCL is quite borked in AS2. Better spend money on the CPU.
The recent Haswell-E series has a nice entry level hexcore i7 that is finally affordable ;-)

You either have a very slow CPU or a an above average GPU...
On my old Quad Phenom it was 25%, on my new toy I expect switching OpenCL on will result in a speed penalty. have not had time to check that yet.

Why speculate? My system specs are sitting there to the right of posts. There is no field for the system drive, which is a Corsair Neutron GTX SSD.

Core i7 6x's score higher than my setup on most tests. But that's about it, other than multi cpu server/workstation setups. GPU is mid range to a gamer, but per NVIDIA higher would not help photo or video processing.

I did notice that with openCL=off, CPU load is higher. Batch time per image for 24MP images is 0.26 seconds with OpenCL=on and 0.36 seconds with it off (82 image batch).

AfterShot2 Pro version 2.1.2.10 x64 on OS X

I just registered to investigate this exact bug. Deselecting "Raw Impulse Noise Removal" results in an exception which crashes the application; this only occurs when OpenCL acceleration is enabled, and happens with both the HD 4000 and GT650M GPUs available on my machine. 100% repeatable. Given this bug exists on both Windows (as per OP gregglee) and OS X, I think it is fair to conclude it is an ASP2 bug.

These are a couple of excerpts from the crash-log generated by OS X:

I got this crash too today for the first time (first time because I unchecked the Raw Impulse noise by accident). 100% repeatable when rebooting ASP2 and unchecking the Raw impulse noise box. I have a HD 4000 on a 2.3 i7 with 16 GB RAM. Now strangely enough tonight, I am trying to repeat the crash and I can't get it to crash. Everything works fine...

This is indeed reproducible as ASP2 crashed when I turned off Raw Impulse Noise Removal.

This is on a Mac Pro 8 Core with an ATI 5870 (OpenCL ON and set to Standard). However, for my situation, OpenCL enabled just results in a whole lot of crashes at random.
