Black lines, distorted pixels bug. Effects last past closing

Post by ShakhMat »

I got Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X7 yesterday and installed it today, and when I ran it, it looked fine. It worked really well for a few minutes. Then (randomly) when I tried playing a video clip that was not on the timeline, it did something like this:

Image

except the trial was the content in the window, and it went straight down. I immediately (by reflex) pressed [esc] and it stopped, leaving the window open, but this effect on it:

Image.

Very shortly after, the window started juddering, leaving this:

Image.

I rebooted and tried using Service Pack 1, which I may have used before opening Corel the first time (because it was offered), but I can't remember if it was a Service Pack that I installed or a different update of some sort. The files I were previewing were .avi files. The effects last past closing VideoStudio and when the bug/glitch occured, I had been previewing clips for a few minutes. I could only fix the screen by rebooting the computer.

I'm sorry, but I am very confused. (Incidentally, I reorganised your screen layout putting spaces between your text and your images. In its original state, it was very difficult to follow.) I also simply don't understand what you mean when you said:
...except the trial was the content in the window, and it went straight down
But what is confusing me are the screen shots. They are most definitely not of the Video Studio screen appearance. The black part of the screen and the toolbar across the top looks like something HP might have installed. You said:
Then (randomly) when I tried playing a video clip that was not on the timeline
Where was that video clip if it wasn't in the timeline? Was it in the VS library window? And if it wasn't there, what were you playing it on -- Video Studio or some other player? If it was some other player, was Video Studio even open at the time?

And while you say the video was an .avi, what sort of avi was it? Unfortunately, there are over 800 different video formats which use the .avi extension, and they are widely different in Properties. So if you can open Video Studio, can you please right click on one of those avi clips in the timeline and copy ALL its Properties here, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment.

Then we might have something which will tell us what is going on. But as it is, in all my years on this forum, I cannot say I have ever seen any other user report something like this as being attributable to Video Studio...

I think what we see is what the OP did to recreate what he saw. That was a lot of work. I have seen something like this before but I can't recall the cause.

However, some things to think about:
VS doesn't seem to be ram intensive though rendering takes a lot of cpu. The OP has plenty of cpu and ram. If there are a lot of things open( like a browser with many windows open, even though minimized ) or windows downloading updates, or even running the 32 bit version of VS on this 64 bit machine might bump up against the onboard video limit. No way to know for sure. Temp files can fill up ram and slow down a computer. If you don't know what clearing the cache is, you probably haven't done it.

Sorry about the long wait. I normally do have a ton of Google Chrome tabs open, but I had just restarted to make sure that it wasn't any of that sort of thing. Clearing the cache is deleting temporary files, right? Also, in the OP I meant trial*, not trial. Finally, yes, I was making a mock-up of what happened. Thanks for replying!

...and I forgot to post the .avi properties!

It's actually barely compressed; it uses the Fraps codec (which is almost as bad). If you don't know what Fraps is, Fraps is a screen-capture software that, due to the virtues of screen-capture, has to be able to save the file in real-time, which, as a result, makes the file very very large.

Corel supply VideoStudio as a trial but I have never seen it supplied as a trial* - the correct name for the programme you have is a trial - unless you have something different ?

The OP does mean "trial" of the same window spread out like a deck of cards. Much like in his screen shot.

Interesting that you didn't go to 8.1 before this. Is your system fully updated now? I know there have been reports of Windows updates causing problems. I've never had any trouble with them. The vast majority of updates deal with security and bug fixes.

Yes, empty temp files.

Sorry about the late reply. I think that you thought the trial example image was from my system. I just took that from Imgur or somewhere. I was on Win8.1 the whole time. How would you typically go about clearing a cache safely and making sure the temp files are deletable without causing issues? (E.g., temp files are stored but not accessed at a moment, you clear the cache, it deletes them, the program tries to access them but fails.) Thanks for the help!

Control panel/Internet Options/General tab, select Delete in Browsing history/Check "Preserve Favorites website data" and "Temporary Internet Files and website files", uncheck everything else unless you know what it does/Delete.
This has nothing to do with files used by software.
