unsatisfying results with face recognition

Post by waeller »

Hi together.

I'm using PSP Pro X7 64bit and i have a very time consuming problem with the face recognition.

I have around 20.000 photos and my first try with face recogintion was to scan folders by year.

The result were many, many groups of faces even multiple groups for the same person.
Ok, i began to name the groups an hoped that the results would automatically refine, but they did not.

Next try was to delete all groups, rerun the recognition over one year and name the biggest groups hoping the recognition for the other "unknown" person would automatically refine.
But they did not.

Another try was to scan smaller folders with about 200 to 300 pictures hoping the face recognition will get better with each new folder.
But I have still a very inaccurate result. Even with pictures which look nearly the same.

Comparing to the picasa face recognition this is a very bad result :-(

Are there any hints, tips, workarounds or even a explanation of the recognition algorithm to get out of this "doom loop?"

kind regards,

waeller

I think the lack of response since you posted indicates that very few people use face recognition. I believe this feature was introduced in version X5 or X6. I have used it only to test it and have had the same experience as you - it leaves much to be desired and Picasa is much better. It is useable for clear faces in relatively small numbers of images.

One other problem with this; let's say you were able to get face recognition to work on thousands of your images. You select a person, see a version you like and edit the image. If you want to store the new version in the same location as the original, you have no idea which folder it came from. In Manage mode the source of the image should be indicated.

I also find the facial recognition not as satisfying as with Picasa (and Picasa has basically gone away).

I was wondering if you had found any extra information that isn't on this posting thread.

It seems that in the thumbnails for the faces they are quite grainy as compared to Picasa. I was wondering if an explanation exists for the algorithm, or if any tweaks are available. Or even an off-line package.
