JP,
I strongly second using ccleaner. You can download the free version from Piriform, the developer.
Your action choices are on the left of the screen. The top one cleans temp files. Select the next one down to clean the registry. Select Scan For Issues in the lower left. A list will appear of bad registry entries. Click Fix Selected Issues, which will be all of them. You will be asked if you want to make a back up of the registry, that's up to you, I don't. Then click Fix All Selected Issues. Then click Close, right next to the button you just clicked. Then run it again until there are no issues.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Yes used that and other registry cleaners without improvement. I thought that they would have fixed the problem.
I should have doen a Windows RESTORE which should have fixed it. I have used this in the past but completely forgotten about it.
Too late now as Windows Repair removes all restore points.
I think as I have a legitimate copy of W7 in the post and will reformat and do a fresh install that we don't need to persure this any further.
The really crazy thing is that the problem only manifested itself in 3 prograsm - my backup utility (does not write to registry and VS6 and also VS7 (yes I have VS7 but was in the middle of a project started in VS7 and wanted to finish it using VS6).
NO other programs have problems.
Anyway looking forward to a fresh install of a legitimate W7
Thanks everyone.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
JO,
I really do suggest getting the corel cleaner. My past problems with something that corrupted X6 and later (separate instance) X7 meant that a conventional uninstall using windows process - which generally worked - did not (work). Even after cleaning, trying to re-install got the same result you are reporting - the re-install just doesn't start. There's obviously something in the registry that corel checks, and a corruption means no replacee with new installee. Just what I experienced (the corel cleaner fixed that) and you now report.
Right now, you seem to be dead in the water with VS. And reluctant to wipe it all out - but how well off are you now? You reported VS X6 won't work, and won't re-install so you can't use it anyway. Whatever caused your initial problem, a new start seems to be the only way forward at this point.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Hi David
I don’t think the X6 cleanup file will help.
I feel Johns problem is not just individual software but more Operating System problems, it could also be hardware, and bad ram or harddrive problems could cause all sorts of problems. John may benefit from expert advise form computer guys.
He seems sure that the Windows 7 is a bad copy and is about to re-install a new version. Hopefully that will work.
Anyway I have attached the Cleanup facility for X6 just in case it does help.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Thanks Trevor,
It will be interesting to see what happens when I install a fresh legitimate copy of W7.
As pointed out before this 'bug' is only causing my backup program, VS6 and VS7 not to work all other programs work ok including Corel PaintShop Pro. Also after uninstalling VS6 I cannot reinstall it - the PC locks up just like it does when attempting run run those installed programs.
Maybe its a corrupt .dll file but surely that should have been corrected by a windows repair.
I will find out on Tuesday or Wednesday when my new W7 should arrive.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Hi John
Good luck with the new windows 7.
It was the reference to 1000 of updates that raised eyebrows.
Have you managed to install those updates?
Anyway, once you have the new windows running with your programs installed, most of the programs that you need to run the computer.
Backup…
Create a Disc Image of the C:drive, that will be about 100Gb
Then should the computer fail you can always restore to that state with all programs installed.

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Thanks Trevor.
That is a good idea to keep a disc image of C: drive. It should be smaller than you suggest as I have most data files on a different disk as my C: drive is 80GB of an SSD drive.
And yes you were correct taht the X6 cleanup wouldn;t help as is only will run on an installed V6 and currently I cannot even install VS6.
Anyway I now have it in case of a future problem (although I will try Windows Restaore first

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
FYI
Did a memory test and check C: drive for all errors - all ok.
Please remind me if this is correct - VS7 was the first version to offer a 64 bit version?
Have any issues been noted running 32 bit VS6 on Windows 7 64 bit?
Thanks

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
Yes Video Studio X7 (CVSX7) was the first version to support 64 bit.
When you purchase you have the opportunity to download both versions 64 bit and 32 bit.
You can install either version on a 64 bit platform.
Running X6—I have not had any problems

Re: VS6 locks PC and cannot reinstall
FYI
I installed a new version of Windows 7 and when I tried to select the existing partition I got an error message something to do with wrong boot blocks on the partition or something similar and so I deleted the partition and re-created it which fixed that problem.
Now that all is re-installed I don't seem to have any "locking up" problems with those 3 programs I had before. So it appears it was solely a problem with Windows (and probably because I had a 'illegal' copy of W7.
