photos not showing up

Post by Kinz »

I installed PSP X7, but when I upload new photos, they don't automatically go to new version. They do show up in X4 which is still on the computer, and they load to Windows Photo Gallery, but they don't show up in X7. How can I get them to auto load? Thanks Oh, and why, when I search in the "search" bar in the user web board for one thing, does everything under the sun come up?!?!

Have you read this thread .. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=55506 .. ?

If this does not help, write again describing exactly the steps you are taking, what tools you are using. What you describe is too vague.

I have had PSP X4 on my computer for years. When I plug in my camera with new photos, they all load to Windows photo gallery and also to PSP X4. I installed PSP X7, plugged in the camera, the photos load to Windows photo gallery and to X4, but they don't load to X7. If I plug the camera in and go to "import", they act like they are importing, but then I get an error message that says "command could not complete because the document type is not supported." The photos are JPG's and RAW files. Never had a problem before. Thanks for any suggestions.

By coincidence, I think the problem you describe was discussed in this thread a few days ago. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=55471

So the short answer appears to be that the downloader you are accustomed to using with X4 does not have an equivalent in X7. There are alternatives discussed in the thread.

Ok, after the 4th or 5th time of them not showing up automatically, I plugged the camera in a little while ago after a few more test shots, and it now works. I do have to open Windows Photo Gallery and load the photos from there, but now when I go back into X4 or X7, they are there. Strange. Thanks for everybody's suggestions and help.

And now it's not working again! Just did a few more shots to test, and they don't import to X7. Although they import to X4, as well as Windows Photo Gallery . Very frustrating.

Just watched a YouTube video that explained how to do it.

So, did the video solve your problem?

If not, you have a number of choices:
- You can continue to feel frustrated with X7 - it will never do what you seem to want. Or
- you can continue to use X4 to do the transfer from your camera to a folder.
- you can use a card reader and transfer from the card to a folder. The last card reader I bought cost $10 in a dollar store.
- you can find a different program that behaves as you expect it should when you plug in your camera.

You use the expressions "import to X7" and "import to X4". Let me emphasize again - Images, photos, files, call them what you will, are not stored in either X4, X7 or any photo editing program. The files are stored in folders on your computer. Each program, whether it is X4 or X7 accesses, looks at, those folders. X4 is using the same folder as X7. Open Windows Explorer and you will find the folders with your files.

Or, (and I just figured this out) in X7, click 'File', 'Open', 'My Pictures' in (in a Windows menu), go to the folder with the photos you're looking for, right click that folder, then left click 'Browse With Paint Shop Pro X7'. It makes a folder with that date under 'Collections', and opens all the photos. Then you can adjust, edit, any photo you want. And they are all saved in PSPX7. X4 did this automatically.

Wrong - nothing is saved in PSPX7. Files are saved in folders on your computer. You choose to be stuck in this mind warp. Hartpaul has some good caveats in the other thread in which you posted. When you used X4 it would create a folder on your computer into which it saved the files.

Like I said, I can see the photographs now in X7 after taking the steps that I posted. Very simple. I really don't care where the files (photographs) are - I just know when I open the application, I want to easily see the photographs. Picasa, PaintShop Pro X4, PhotoShop CS6, all do this - after downloading photos from the camera, I can see them, by date, when I open the application. I was just wondering why X7 doesn't. But by doing what I said in my previous post, I can now.

Kinz:

I did exactly what you describe other than I plugged a card into a reader rather than have the card in the camera and the camera plugged in - same thing, reading a memory card. As you say, the directory and photos show up in the Navigation palette in Collections. I edited a photo and saved it.

Then I removed the card. The folder/photos disappeared from Collections.

I repeated the procedure and left the card in place while I closed PSP. Restarted PSP with the card in place and it showed the folder. Close PSP, remove the card, restarted PSP, no photos. To access the same photos I need to go through the File/open process again.

To access the photos I would need to have the camera with the specific card connected or have the card in the card reader. I prefer to store my images on the hard drive in the computer.

When you are reading your camera and card photos, PSP is seeing it as another disc drive- as soon as you disconnect the device it can't be read by any program. You have to download the photos into Windows first in order to have them permanently viewable.

No version of PSP imports photos from a camera or memory card. In X4 & X3, the Corel Photo Downloader was a separate program and it mported the photos from camera or card into the designated Windows folders, not into PSP, and then there is an option to view in Windows explorer or PSP.

PSP, no matter the version, only reads and displays the folders that are in Windows. Starting in PSP X5 they started using a data base to store the links and thumbnails of the Windows folders, hence there may be a delay in PSP reading the newly imported photos in Windows. In PSP X5 on there is an option to back up your database so that it may be restored in the event it is corrupted- I've backed mine up but never had to restore it.

Some photo programs have the option to import directly from camera or card, like Picasa, but not PSP.

Ok, I do see where the tabs say 'Collections' and 'Computer', and if I click 'Computer', it does show all the drives - hard drive, USB's, Passport, etc., but then if I click 'Collections' it shows the 'Folders', and below that, dates, which can be clicked to open the photographs. I can also right click a date, and choose 'Rename the Folder', and call it whatever I want - sometimes keeping the date and adding text, or changing the date to 'Trains' (or whatever), and it will alphabetize the folders, and/or keep them in chronological order. So maybe it is saving the files/photographs somewhere other than in the actual application. But since this tab ('Collections') is always there, that's where I go. Each time I open the X7 application on the computer, it shows all the folders, by date, and I can click on whatever date I need, and it opens all the photographs. I can scroll down till I get to the one I need, click it, go to the 'adjust' or 'edit' tab, do what I need to do, then close it. If I need to edit another photo, I do the same thing. But unlike what you were saying Mark, I don't remove the card from the camera. When I come home and upload the photos, I plug the camera into the computer (the internal USB PCI card) using the USB 3.0 cord, turn on the camera, open Windows Photo Gallery, click 'Import', and it imports the photos to Photo Gallery. When it's finished the import, I turn off the camera, unplug it, then open X7, and do the steps that I had said previously, 'File', 'Open', 'My Pictures', etc. So like I said, I really don't care where the photographs really are, as long as I can open the app., and see the photos immediately - which I can.
