Size of image when imported into Videostudio

Post by mwsing »

I imported a lot of clips from my Video camera early in the year and am now getting around to trying to edit them. When I import into Videostudio Pro X7 I am getting a smaller image in the display window, but with the correct aspect ratio. I assume that I must have some setting wrong somewhere, but have been unable to resolve the problem. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks

How much smaller is the image in the preview window? Are you importing into an overlay track?

Incidentally, I don't know how or why, but you posted this same message a total of 9 times... I have removed the other copies.

Thanks Ken - sorry for posting 9 times. I did not see a message saying that the submit had been successful, so assumed that it hadn't.

The aspect ratio in the preview window looks to be 16 :9, but on my screen the image leaves a gap of 2cm down each side and 1 cm at the top and bottom. This also occurs with the sample clips already in the library, whose properties say that the attributes are 24 bits, 1920x1080, 16:9 The video clips that I am using have attributes of 24 bits, 1440 x 1080, 16:9. They all leave gaps as described above.

However, when I load a project that I completed some time ago and went through the share phase, this does not happen (I have gone back to the original clips in the project.)

Maybe I.m just getting confused because I haven't done much editing for a while, but it seems weird to me.

Do you have a tick in the box against "Show message when inserting first video clip to the timeline" in "Preferences"

Hi

Well yes that is relevant and probably explains the smaller looking video.

I have just spent 3 hrs this morning with Corel Support using Remote Assist, so they are aware of the problem, however not many users suffer, you are the third maybe fourth I have heard of with this problems, other forum users have been unable to replicate the issue.
For me it goes back to the release of Video Studio X7.

As they have not found a cause recommending a solution is difficult.

Remove the problem??????????

Reset the library.
Restore the workstation by re-naming the 17.0 folder.
I think that’s all that is needed

It will however re-appear at some point.

For me it seems associated with Instant Projects, the library sometimes asks to import from earlier versions.
Somehow Instant Projects seems to be the trigger.
Using Fast Flick can save the project as an instant project.

Have you used FastFlict or Export Instant Projects options?

You will notice the Project Properties panel will be empty for the affected templates.

Brian is correct and you should try using the Show Messages to set the Project Properties for Mpeg2

By the way the smaller video frame you describe looks like that from the library clips.

Brian; Thanks. I did not have a tick in the "Show message" box. I have now put one but the image is still the same size when I open the project.
Trevor: Thanks for the information but I need a little more help:
What do you mean by "Reset the library" and how do I do this?
When you say rename the 17.0 folder I assume you mean the one that is Corel VideoStudio/17.0 What should I rename it to and doesn't this mean that the program won't find its contents?

Incidentally, I still have folders 14.0 and 15.0 which contain old voiceover and music clips. Could this be causing a problem?

I have never used Instant Projects, nor Fast Flicks

I have just opened a file made with an earlier version of VideoStudio and the preview window showed the full size, so it sounds as if you are right in thinking that it started with X7

Hi mwsing

If you go to Settings Project Properties you will get the error, click ok opens the PP panel, the Existing Profiles are empty, what is selected in the top panel ?– project format..
If you now change the project properties to another Project Format they those would be used for future projects.

X7 defaults to the last project properties for new projects.

Ok you should be running ok, if you try to change the project properties again you will eventually see the error.
For me the error is affecting the Mobile templates but generally would be the DVD section?

Reset the program…………

The only way I have been able to remove that error is to re-install the programs along with all personal data,
but we can manually reset the workstation to its factory defaults, these are the details for X6, I could not find X7 details, but are the same other than using the folder 17.0.

On Windows Vista / 7 :

1. Click on Start.

2. Click in the search box at the bottom of the Start menu.

3. Type in: %APPDATA% and press the enter key.

4. In the new window, find the Ulead Systems folder.

5. Open the Ulead Systems folder.

6. Open the Corel VideoStudio Pro folder.

7. There should be a folder named 16.0 here.

8. Rename 16.0 to 16.0_old.

9. Launch VideoStudio Pro X6.

X6 to Default Settings
I am having a bit of trouble embedding this link, please copy and paste to your browser..

http://howto.corel.com/index.php/Corel: ... %20factory

X7 64 Bit versions have different folders here:-
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)

Those changes should correct the error, however I think it is somehow associated with Instant Projects and importing from an earlier version, if you access the Instant Projects library the system will import templates then may ask to import earlier versions, -- best to say no to that.

Interested in how you get on

Hi Trevor

I am not having much luck at all. When I renamed the 17.0 folder and relaunched VideoStudio the VideoStudio clips showed full size, and the project properties re-appeared. However, as soon as I opened the project that I am having trouble with, the image is once again small, but the project properties are still there. I tried reloading a few projects and I find that one that I created in June is fine, but any that I created after that time all open with the reduced image. This seems hard to explain. I even closed the June one, re-opened a later one, which opened with the reduced size I then re-opened the June one and it is still OK.

What do you suggest that I do now>

Hi

Did the fix by re-naming the folder cure the Improper Error message.

After opening the problem VSP what shows as a name top right, that indicates the Project Properties frame size. If set to a 4:3 aspect (720 x 480 ) then the videos may show smaller than normal.
Are you able to change/ edit the Project Properties

Before you change anything, can you zip the problem VSP and attach to your post.

Hi Trevor

Thanks for your patience and ongoing help - it looks as if the problem is solved!

Yes, renaming the VideoStudio folder did resolve the improper argument error message. Yes I can now edit the project properties. Indeed I had yesterday looked at this and thought that this might be the problem. I did change the aspect to 16:9, and then got a message saying "Modifying your project properties may clear the cache for video/audio preview and the undo/redo function. Do you want to continue?" I thought it safe rto say "No" . Following your advice, and reconsidering the error message, I went ahead and said "Yes" - problem fixed.

So sorry to take up so much of your time when the solution eventually turned out to be so simple. I don't know why I always have such difficult issues. I guess because I have been using the product for so many years that most of the ordinary things I have sorted out! I will attach the Zipped project anyway. Incidentally, I do not see the fundtion to zip strait from VideoStudio, which I'm sure used to be there, so I had to download the software from Winzip.

It won't let me upload the file, saying that the extension vsp is not allowed ?????!!!

Uploading a .vsp file is of no use, .vsp files are only a set of instructions which tell VS where all the components of your project are stored.

I think what Trevor meant is for you to create a Smart Package, Click on file, top left hand corner, select Yes to save the file, give your project a name, then you can select Zip File, then click OK.
Your project can now be uploaded

Robert -- I suspect in this case that Trevor did in fact mean to zip the vsp file and not make a smart package -- though we can let him speak for himself. But in this case he would not be interested so much in the actual video included in the project, but what the vsp would show as being the project properties and whether, more specifically, things are set to 4:3 or 16:9 as he alluded to above.
