PSP X7 Caching

Post by jsg »

When I open a folder it takes a painfully long time for PSP to cache all the images. Not too bad, but the problem is that when I close the program and re-open it, the caching still takes the same amount of time. In other words, it's like the caching isn't even working.

Is there a way around this? I have 6 GB of RAM, a fairly fast processor and I've tried experimenting with the scratch disk settings but to no avail.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has figured out how to speed PSP up a bit.

I'm not sure this will help but is worth trying.

Close X7. Go to C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\17.0\Database. Change the name of ImageDB.db to something else - add a letter or number. This in effect deletes the file but allows you to go back to it if you are not happy with the results. When you reopen X7 it will create a new ImageDB.db file.

The downside of this is that you will lose the file names under Collections/Files, but that should be easy to recreate. I don't know if there are other changes in Navigation that may be lost, but if X7 works more quickly that may not be a big loss. If you're unhappy with the results, delete ImageDB.db and change back the name of the original file you started with.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your suggestion, I did that, but I don't think I explained the issue I am having sufficiently:

The tags seem to be useless because the only way PSP connects the tag on the image to the tag list in "collections" is by actually opening that folder and letting PSP cache all the images and their associated tags. But when I close PSP and reopen it, all of that caching disappears and the only tags that show up in the collection list are the ones being cached in the current session. Of course I turned off all the reset buttons including "delete all cache files". For example, if I want to search for images with the tag "water" I actually have to be in that folder for PSP to find those images, which defeats the whole purpose of having tags to make searching easier, particularly when there are over 50 folders of images.

The cache seems "broken". Possibly a bad install? Everything else works so I am not sure about the bad install idea. I know that Aftershot Pro 2's cache works correctly across sessions, when I reopen the program all of the cached images display very quickly.

Of course Corel is no help at all, they obviously don't support their own products without paying them extra and their manual says nothing about how to get the cache to work correctly.

Thanks again for your suggestion, if anybody else knows how to fix this please let me know!

Jerry:

I experimented a bit with the tags. The only tags I have in my photos are the ones from ASP - they seem to transfer o.k. into the jpgs.

When I click on a tag in the list I get a bunch of photos displayed; I had done nothing with the tags before testing. If I remove a folder from the Collections, images from that folder no longer come up for the tag. Put the folder back into Collections and once again clicking on the tag retrieves those images. Not dependent on the "session" but the folder needs to be in Collections.

There is what I consider a bug that I have reported to Corel but one that has not been acted on yet. Whenever you retrieve images from Collections using Tags, Faces, Places and some other functions, there is no way to tell where those images are stored. I would like to be able to select an image that has been retrieved and have the location shown.

Hi Mark,

That is not what is happening on my end. When I open PSP there are no tags listed in the collection list, even though I have hundreds of tagged images. The only way those tags show up is if I click on a folder where the images reside. In other words, each time I open the program the images have to be re-cached so that Collection-Tags knows that they are there. It makes no sense, there's no advantage of tagging photos if the only way to find them is to have to find and open the folder that contains the images. I am going to check this with another computer and see if the same issue exists. Caching and tagging have no real function if the program doesn't remember what is cached and tagged between sessions.

Best,
Jerry

Problem solved!

I just learned I had to include all the folders with images in the Collection-Folders for the tags to show up between sessions. Whew!

Thanks Mark for taking the time to try and help!

Glad you solved it.

That is what I was trying to describe in my earlier note. In Collections I include only the folders that I work on most often and use ASP for more extensive searches. But if I wanted tags for all my images I would include "My Pictures" in Collections.
