Welcome to the forum!

Which comes first in the timeline -- a video clip or photo? And where did the video come from? It seems very strange that nothing plays. Usually it takes a couple of seconds for the program to organise playing a project on the fly, but usually no more than that. But maybe it is a format which VS does not like, or which could be corrupt. Could you please right click on one of the videos in the timeline and copy ALL its Properties here, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment. Then we might have a better idea of what we are dealing with.

Did you tick the box beside "Show Message when inserting first video clip into the timeline" in Preferences > General? If so, did you get a message asking if you wanted the Project settings to match those of the clip?
