project property and proxy settings

Post by johnsweet »

Hey every one
I used to shoot video in avcd 1980x1080 50p and edit and covert to DVD .
I have some questions to maintain faster encode as well as quality.
What should be the project property? Is it 1980x1080 avchd or 720x576 dvd?
And proxy setting should be 720x576 mpeg or AVI . btw I am using x7 ultimate
And i7 PC. Experienced members suggestion would be appreciated. :)

Hi
A few comments here……….
If you have upgraded your camera to use HD you should consider updating your pc to allow bluray burning, that way you will get the best quality.

If that is not an option then you can burn what is known as a hybrid disc, this uses the Standard DVD disc to burn AVCHD files, you are limited to 4 Gb ish so about 30 minutes, maybe use a data rate of 18000kbps.

Video using 50P x 1920 x 1080 is not suitable for burning a disc, it has to use 25fps x 1920 x 1080
Unless you use 50P 1280 x 720 which is Bluray compliant, certainly not an option for me.

Having said all that maybe you should record 1920 x 1080 x 25fps.

Project Properties, the general rule would be to match your video files properties, From F6 Preferences, Show Messages when inserting first video------ should be selected, Start a new project then add a video file, you should see a pop-up panel— choose details will show the video properties --choose yes or ok

With your project properties matching the video files properties complete the editing.

Render the project to your output file, first using HD settings, and if burning to disc should use 25fps.

I would then convert that file to Mpeg2, the new file will be suitable to burn a standard DVD

Smart Proxy

Depending on your pc’s capability you may not need Smart Proxy, are you having problems playing the clips in the timeline. If you feel you can benefit by using Smart proxy, choose the Auto Generate option.

Thanks for the response.

I am aware bluray/acvhd disc can make good quality video. but. My clients here only need dvd for their events.
I shoot 50p to maintain high quality as well as good slow motion effect in post editing and also the downgrade video look better than shooting SD quality to downgrade.my question not answered. :( which proxy setting help me to render fast. ... avi or mpeg?
secondly if i match my original video to project property as same it will help to render fast???

some ones in put would be highly appropriated.

Hi

Smart Proxy is used to enhance the editing and playback from the timelines.
It has no effect on the speed of renders.

Matching your video properties will certainly improve render times providing you are rendering like for like.

However you record using HD 50P, as I mentioned a DVD uses 25 fps x 720 x 576, that is not the same as the originals. You are converting the Avchd to DVD as such you are not only changing the frame rate of 50P but the frame size from 1920 x 1080 to 720 x 576, along with the data rate to 8000kbps ----------- and that will take longer to render.

I did mention rendering to same as original, That would create a single file same quality as original, maybe keeping that as an archive.
Then use that new file to convert to Mpeg2, ultimately to burn a DVD Disc.

I also use 1980 x 1080 AVHCD and in "Settings >> Preferences >> General" I have a tick in "Show message when inserting first video clip in timeline"

what that means is that as I put the first video in the timeline a message pops up and asks me if I want to set the project properties to match the video - saying Yes to that automatically makes the project properties identical to those of the video so you have an exact match .

I then edit my project and when all is finished if I am going to make a standard DVD (as like you I often do) then when I go to 'Share' I choose to make a mpeg-2 video with the following properties :-
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

I then play the resulting file - usually in something else like Windows Media player to check quality.

Then I open VideoStudio with nothing in the time line and go via Share to the create DVD module at which point I import the new and tested mpeg-2 and continue to burn to disc.

As regard proxy settings - it is best not to use it unless you are having problems with editing - it has no affect at all on rendering times, using it will not speed up the render - if you do decide to use it then leave them at 720 x 576 (which is a PAL setting) - but just a note - the creation of proxy files is not instantaneous - depending on the length of the video in may take minutes to happen for each video - so don't expect to put the file in the timeline and rush away with the proxies - once a proxy has been created an additional little icon is added to the library thumbnail (see image below)

The final step in my procedure is that when I get to the final 'burn' window in the create disc module I do not put a DVD in the drive - but uncheck the 'burn to disc' option and instead check the Create disc image option

this will then create an .iso file which you can check in the free VLC player which will play the iso exactly as if it was a disc with menus etc - when you are happy with everything you can go back to VideoStudio and use "Tools >> burn from disc image" to burn a DVD knowing all will be good.
