Importing a DVD

I'm using an older version of MovieFactory. (3 or 4, I don't remember at the moment.) There's a DVD i've tried to import into a project. When I look at the Import_DVD folder that results, it appears to have broken the video up into four 1 Gigabyte chunks. A section that I want to extract crosses one of these 1 GB boundaries. After editing the two pieces and then joining them into one, I seem to get a dead spot in the audio in the vicinity of the splice. I would like to try to import the DVD such that the section of interest does not fall on a file boundary. Not sure how to do that. When I start the import, there is a button in the dialog box that says "Trim Video" or something like that. It's not very clear how that works. Any advice would be appreciated.

First, all DVD video are split into 1 Gb files, Vob files this is done when burning the disc.

I don’t have DVD Movie Factory installed but other programs use Import Digital Media to extract the discs content to the hard drive as mpeg2 files.
You should locate the disc and the Video-TS folder, this contains the movie files, yes they will be split to 1 Gb sizes.
Importing should combine the Vobs as Titles or Chapters, try selecting Titles only.
The positions between the Vob files should be seamless.

Another option that may work is to copy the Video_TS folder to your hard drive, then rename the Vob files to use the extension MPG, import the files to the timeline.

Not many people using Movie factory these days.

I also do not use it but have always believed many of it's functions to be the same as VideoStudio - which I do use.

In VideoStudio I would put the DVD in the drive and then inside VideoStudio RIGHT click on the timeline and choose "Import Digital Media" - this opens a dialogue box as per image below - which you then must click to tick the appropriate boxes - and will then proceed to import the videos as an editable mpeg2

Doesn't Movie Factory do something similar.

Maybe downloading and installing the FREE TRIAL of VideoStudio will allow you to import the video from the DVD which you could then edit in Movie Factory.

Thanks for that info BrianCee. Apparently my old email address was still on my account, so I just updated it.

As for the other issues, I will be replacing my old computer with a new one in a few days. I will try to update my software. I am currently using MovieFactory 3 and VideoStudio 7 SE.

As you have Video Studio 7 SE that may be a cut down version.

Right click the timeline – is Import Digital Media available?????

given you are using the SE version it may not be there??

I have MF7 and VSP 8. They do about the same, just as fast, etc. However, MF7 suddenly became unable import DVDs after using it without problems (just the occasional crash...) for years. In the directory selection tree when importing, everything is ghosted out except for the top of the tree, "Desktop". "Computer" is ghosted out and, therefore, there is no listed DVD. Every other program that accesses the DVD drive works just fine. I called Corel about that and their solution was to upgrade to VSP8, which I did. It worked properly, imported the DVDs and so on, although the interface is less complicated in MF7 (IMHO). You may ask that if VSP8 will import the DVDs, then what's the problem? VSP8 suddenly won't start up anymore and I tried VSP8 on another computer - same problem. While I will post the problem with VSP8 not starting in the VSP8 section, has anyone else experienced the inability to import DVDs in MF7? Thank you.

If you look at the Video Studio forum, you will see that recent Windows updates have caused a raft of problems with Video Studio (all versions) for users running Windows 7. Corel have provided a hotfix for X8: see the link in http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 25#p321325
