The problem isn't that you're using the push brush because it can be used to edit the selection properly and give you a marquee matching the edit. The problem is the settings you are using with the push brush. The brush has a hardness and opacity setting. If these settings are less than 100 then it can look to you like you have "pushed" the red overlay (i.e., it might seem like you have pushed some of the overlay away from the original selection) but in actual fact you have left some of it behind, just not in sufficient quantity to be easily visible on your monitor. Set those options to 100 and you can push the overlay around and when you click Edit Selection again you will see that the marquee now follows the new position you expect it to follow.jamesd1 wrote:I'm using Paintshop Pro X8
The instruction I read says I can edit a selection like this:
1. Make a selection.
2. Click edit selection.
3. It turns red and I can alter it by using the push brush.
4. Then it says, when done, click edit selection again whereupon the red is suppose to disappear leaving my newly modified selection.
But when I get to step 4 and click edit selection again, the red disappears but the selection reverts to my original selection instead of showing itself surrounding the former red area.
What am I doing wrong.

In addition to the keyboard shortcut there are two other ways to swap colors. You can use the swap materials tool on the Materials Palette pictured below.
Or you can right-click while painting with the mouse to switch to the Background/Fill color.
