Edit Selection problem
G'day,
When I try to paint with my Paint Brush after I have selected Edit Selection. I cannot paint over the whole image only one part of it. It seem like I have selected a square or oblong as I end up with straight edges and cannot go any further. How can I rectify this so that I can paint over the whole image. Have I pressed something I should not have?
Many thanks Perry

Re: Edit Selection problem
I presume you have PSP X5 (after I searched your previous posts).
Your image is too small to see what you are doing. I looks as if you have some area selected and you are trying to paint in red.
First you need to make a part selection, then on your layers palette Click Edit Selection.
The area enclosed by your marching ants will turn red and your materials palette will only allow you to paint with black, white and shades of grey.
Your materials palette is still showing color so you are not in Edit Selection mode.

G'day Paul,
Thank you for your reply,
I have been trying to copy Cassel's instructions.
Does that make better sense?

Re: Edit Selection problem
Good evening Paul.
It is not solved.
I have been trying to do this for ages and gave up. I tried again to follow the tutorial but when I try to paint over the whole car I get blocked as you can see my the screen shot.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.
Cheers Perry

Re: Edit Selection problem
Perry, I had a look at that advanced extraction texhnique. There were a number of methods mentioned there , but you have not mentioned which one.
Try this:
1 Load your image. Selections > Select None (just in case there is a selection active)
2. In your Materials palette set your foreground/stroke to white and your background/fill to black.
3. Click Edit Selection
4. Paint with white over what you want - it should show up as red.
5. Click Edit Selection to finish and you should then see the selection marquee around what you have painted. Try it with a small area first to see if it works in all areas, and then restart from 1 again.
See if that works.

Re: Edit Selection problem
Aussie Perry:
To start, change your Materials palette from Frame to Rainbow, the middle button at the top of the palette.
In my trials it did not matter if an area was selected or not. If you have nothing selected and invoke "edit selection" nothing happens on your image but the edit selection layer is added and you can start painting (as described below) to select.
Say that you have selected an area using the freehand selection tool and you want to modify that by adding or subtracting from that area. Once you have your initial selection, select Edit Selection either under Selections in the Menu or using the icon in the top left corner of the layers palette. When you do that, a new layer should appear at the top of the stack showing your previously selected area as white and everything else black. On the image you are editing the selected area should have turned red. Also, your materials palette should now be grey scale from black to white.
Select the paintbrush tool. From the icon in the edit selection layer you can see that what is selected is white and what you do not want included is black. Grey will give various levels of opacity. Select the colour depending whether you want to add to or remove from the selection and paint as appropriate.
If your tools don't work as described, post the exact steps that you took and what you observed - be precise. I seem to recall that at some point there may have been a bug whereby the greyscale did not automatically appear in the Materials palette. Good luck.

Re: Edit Selection problem
G'day Paul,
By the way I am using P S P X 6. I was going to upgrade to 7 but read some of the things on other forums and decided to wait.
The problem must have been because I have selected something. As you suggested I opened up the image and Selected None and started again. This time it went well.
Many thanks you have been very helpful as usual.
Cheers Perry

Re: Edit Selection problem
I'm using Paintshop Pro X8
The instruction I read says I can edit a selection like this:
1. Make a selection.
2. Click edit selection.
3. It turns red and I can alter it by using the push brush.
4. Then it says, when done, click edit selection again whereupon the red is suppose to disappear leaving my newly modified selection.
But when I get to step 4 and click edit selection again, the red disappears but the selection reverts to my original selection instead of showing itself surrounding the former red area.
What am I doing wrong.

Re: Edit Selection problem
In step 3 you state you "can" alter the selection with the paint brush but you didn't state that you did alter it. I'm going to assume you did and if that is the case you did do everything correctly. Not sure why it's not working for you as edit selection works as expected for me.
Update: Just re-read your post and noticed you said "push" brush. You should be using the paint brush to alter the selection.

Re: Edit Selection problem
Thanks, I'll try that; a tutorial I read used the Push to alter it but maybe that only worked in older version of PS because it did not work for me. It does alter it in that the area covered by the red is right but last click does not return desired resutl
Re: Edit Selection problem
Also is there a hot key to swap toggle the foreground/background colors on the brush. Could not find it.
