Color Replacer Tool

Post by sophies_mommy2001 »

Hi guys

I've graduated from PSP X up to X7 and really like it so far.

However, I have a question on the Color Replacer Tool. I have both toolbars set the same. In X I can hold down the left mouse button and replace the colour where I want it. This is handy for me as I work in pixel art. But in X7, I can't seem to do the same and if I double click the mouse, it colours ALL the pixels in one colour , rather than just the ones I want, if you know what I mean?

I've attached copies of both tool bars, and you can see they are set the same (apart from the brush size at the moment) and would appreciate it if someone can tell me how to get X7 to color replace like in X.

Cheers!

As far as I'm aware double-clicking has always filled all of the pixels (replace All) where as single clicking, just clicking and dragging, will let you cover a specific area with your brush.

So I'm not sure I understand the problem. Are you saying you can't use the brush normally, and the only way to get a change is to double click?

I normally use the 'hold left mouse button down' method, so I can just go over specific areas to change the colour. I don't like the double clicking method as it changes ALL pixels of a certain colour.

I can hold the left mouse button down, and smoothly use it in X, but X7 seems to 'drag'.

I've experienced a number of the brushes in X7 dragging at first. After the first swipe they seem to respond better. Smart Edge will sometimes add a little sluggishness but I see you do not have it checked so that's not the problem.

Thanks for the reply Kathy. I rebooted etc and went back and its even worse now! I can have my brush over the area that I want to replace, got the right colour in the background etc. Go to click and then it colours other pixels! Very weird! I so want to keep the programme after the trial period, but if this can't be solved, I'll have to dump it and go back to X.

Well, let's hope SP1 brings an improvement.

I also have this problem with Paint Shop Pro X7 on a Hewlett-Packard computer (WIndows 8.1). The colour replacer tool is supposed to replace the background colour with the foreground colour when dragging over the image with the mouse, holding down the left button. However, it functions more like the paint brush in that it replaces all the colours. This makes the function so useless that I have to take the file I am working on to my old computer (Acer Aspire laptop running Windows Vista) and use Paint Shop Pro X. This shouldn't be happening with the colour replacer tool, and the latest updates made it worse. Is there something with materials or textures that I should be worrying about, even though the image uses no textures (the project is a map)? The help page is very bad and bears no relation to the tool use.

You are probably already doing this but just to make sure are you remembering to hold down the Control key while right-clicking on the color you want to replace before you start dragging?

I am not experiencing any problems with the Color Replacer tool, on an XP machine PSP X7 with update Sp1 and 3000 pixel longest side image.
It does behave like a paint brush in that it just replaces the color but also hides any texture effects underneath. If you want the color replaced but want to also retain texture then you need teh Change to Target tool but then you also have to carefully seleect the areas to be replaced.
With the Color Replacer tool you have to continually use control Right click to sample the new shades of colour that you want replaced.

Might be better if the OP posted an example of what they are trying to do and the size information as well.
I know that on very large images there can be a bit of a lag with most brushes at first.

I don't have X7 and I'd only heard of the double-click method for replacing colors. However, I just tried your left-click method in PSP8 and found that it only worked after I changed the tolerance to at least 15. Even then it didn't always work on the image I was working with when zoomed to pixel level. Using a tolerance of 20 worked pretty consistently though. Try adjusting the tolerance and see if that helps.
