Poor Audio and Video Transitioning

Post by Dekade »

Audio:
1 > There seems to be no way to do a more lengthy gradual fade in and fade out of audio than the two fade buttons. Is there any means by which to overcome that?
2 > This prevents a good music mix

Video:
1 > I cannot use transitions when in the Ripple Editing mode.
2 > Is this normal? Is there anyway to make transitions work in Ripple Editing?
3 > Also I have applied a transition to a title in the title track, but, cannot now take it away. It seems to have attached itself permanently to the text. How do I correct that.
4 > Is there a way to delete ONLY a video clip and leave the associated split audio clip?

Audio

You can make the cross fade as long as you like - ignore the two buttons - just left click and hold on one of the pieces of music and slide it along the track over the top of the other piece of music to whatever overlap you need. then just keep clicking and sliding until it sounds right

Video

No you cannot apply transitions when in the ripple editing mode - the object of ripple editing is to hold items relative to each other - applying a transition effectively changes the length of the video - so everything needs to move - so you need to turn off ripple editing to apply transitions and then reset positions manually

To remove the transition that you have applied to the title block - double click on the title+transition block at the transition end - this should separate the two leaving the transition selected - press the delete key on your keyboard - transition is removed.

after you have split audio in the timeline - click on the video block so it is highlighted - press the delete key on your keyboard - video goes leaving audio

Regarding the audio - I understand that issue for two songs on the same track. BUT, what I was vague on (my apologies) is the following: A longer fade is desired for a title track AND audio track to fade out and then for a song to fade in very slowly; song coming in over the title track AND audio track. I would like the song to have a long gradual fade in on top of the title AND audio track.
after you have split audio in the timeline - click on the video block so it is highlighted - press the delete key on your keyboard - video goes leaving audio
I felt certain that I tried that very method at least 7 or 8 times last night. A dialog box kept coming up warning that associated clips would be deleted. Sure enough the separate audio track was deleted. What I did was this:

1 > Made 1st cut/"scissors" split with the scrubber location
2 > Made 2nd cut/"scissors" split with the scrubber location
3 > Attempted to remove the top timeline so that I could replace it with a different video clip
4 > The separate - (split from timeline audio track) - wants to delete with the top timeline.
5 > All of the above done in Ripple Editing mode

Is there a solution to somewhat temporarily remove the Ripple edit then reapply after the top timeline has been deleted? OR - will that somehow cause everything to make an unwanted shift of sorts?

Hi

Assuming the new video clip is the same or longer length………..

After cutting the old clip, drag your new/replacement clip to the timeline, Whilst dragging press “Ctrl” key, then drop the new clip over the old clip.
The new clip should replace the old, retaining all filters applied to old clip.

There is no change in the length of the project so Ripple Editing is not affected.

Ripple Editing is not magic, it simply links all clips overlaid or associated with the top track, so deleting the video clip will also remove the split audio.
Yes you can switch off Ripple, then replace the clip, provided it’s the same length as the original.

You are best editing from left to right, removing all unwanted clips/ frames in the top track, once that is done you wont need “ripple editing” as you wont need to remove or edit any other frames in the top track.

Audio
Audio Fade Durations, go to F6 (Preferences) Change / select the Audio Fade Duration to your desired length. Set the fades from the Options Panel fade ramps.

Once set view the Sound Mixer, here you can manually set/ adjust the fades.

Personally, I would do this using the rubber band method in audio mode, setting the first node in the rubber band down at zero and then gradually raising subsequent nodes upwards to gradually increase the volume to the desired level... Or just setting the first node at zero and a second node at the desired level. In the attached image, Node 2 is at 18 seconds into the video, but could be shorter or longer depending on whether your move it to the left or right along that white horizontal line on which Node 2 is sitting... Indeed, if you wanted the volume even higher, you simply raise Node 2 above that white line...

Ken,

I read your last suggestion but forgot to say "thank you". That was definitely a good suggestion.
