Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Dear All,
I'm new to this forum and would take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry XMas and Happy New Year !
Back to the issue ...
I'm using a PC (i7, Win 8.1 - 64bits, 8GB RAM) and VideoStudio X7 Ultimate (SP 1) to assemble files from different sources into a single video.
For most files, the process is straightforward but I recently run into an issue with a MOV file where I have the sound but no image.
I have the same behaviour in playing directly the file in Quicktime or Media player.
Several files from the same source show the same issue.
So the issue does not seem related to VideoStudio itself, a layer seems to miss ...
After searching the web with these symptoms, it seems the MOV file was generated on a Mac environment with the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC or iCode).
Hence, two questions:
1) Is there a way to use that kind of file with VideoStudio ?
2) if not, any (free and safe: I have only one file to convert ...) converter available ? The ones I found installed so much crap (adware, spyware, unwanted apps, browser bars, ...) that I'm a bit reluctant now to proceed, it takes much more time to install/deinstall all that crap than to convert the file ...
3) if not, a commercial tool that would do the conversion ?
Thanks in advance !

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
MOV is a wrapper and can contain hundreds of different file types.
We need to make sure we have the right codec installed to play the file in question.
Start with ensuring you have the latest version of Quicktime installed.
If that doesn't work, we need to identify the file type inside the wrapper, which may be mp4, mp2 etc. If you don't know the exact file type, telling us where it came from might help us deduce it. If it came from a camcorder or camera then installing any software that came with that would install the correct codec.
If we still don't know, you can use a codec identifier, such as avicodec
http://myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/avicodec.html
http://myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/Ho ... odecs.html
Having found the name and 4c codec identifier we need to find the manufacturer of the codec and install it.
After all of that, so files are just incompatible, so conversion is required.
I like Freemake, a good quality convertor and free. Only problem, you need to install it slowly as anything free these days comes with options to install a ton of other programmes and you want to say NO to all of them.

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
ooops, should have read the title of the post
Apple AIC files are for use on Apple computers, if someone you now gave you this file or you have a Mac, then convert it to a windows friendly file type using that. I'm not sure how well a windows machine will convert an AIC file, I've never done it! You may need to do some googling, but I'm not sure it is possible.

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Thanks Graham,
Although I use iPhones/iPads, I don't have a Mac ...
I already sent an email and wait for the answer of the person who sent me these files to confirm the root cause and, maybe, to export the file to another format.
I'm not sure whether he's literate enough in video processing.
Thanks again !

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Hi
I downloaded a video converter called Format Factory http://www.pcfreetime.com/
But like all free programs tries to install other bits, Browser Support stuff, Drive scanner, at least Format Factory gave you the option to deselect those. It did seem to install without problem.
Whether the program will convert those files I don’t know.
Can you make the video files available, maybe upload to Microsoft One Drive, then we can test the files.

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
You might also want to think about buying the Pro version of Quicktime. It costs around US$30, but adds some extra functions to the freeware version. These include the facility of converting files. Since your original files are specifically Apple, and Quicktime is an Apple product, I would think QT Pro should be able to both play and convert them. However, I have to add that I have never tried this as I had never, until today, even heard of the AIC format!

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Thanks Guys !
I already tried Format Factory (and a bunch of others) but unfortunately does not work either.
I have not tried Quicktime Pro but have read it does not solve this specific issue (if I correctly identified the issue !).
I found a commercial product that does work (at least the trial version): http://www.bigasoft.com/total-video-converter.html
But it costs 47$ to convert 14 seconds of video, so I'll try to investigate other options first and, if nothing else works, will go for it ...
Fo those who want to play, the file (47MB) is here:
http://ski.bonavolta.ch/mae/videos/mae.mov
My daughter (12 yo) during a giant slalom (ski) training ...
A friend of mine, who has a Mac, is also trying to convert it. I'll let you know.
Thanks a lot !

Hi,
Non of my players could play the clip, VS play as white with sound.
But I do have HD Video Converter Factory Pro I got few weeks ago, as free distribution for review.
http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/hd ... converter/
I could load the file, play it and convert it. VS loved it

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
I don't know what happened here, but I had posted before asik and even saw the post... But it has now disappeared! Fine thing to happen to a Corel Admin person!!!
But in fact all I had to report was that Bonagva was right in that QT Pro would not convert the file. The only thing that seemed to work without an error message was to export the image sequence as 360=odd png files. But each was white, and as image files had no audio associated with them.
Oddly enough, VLC player had no trouble playing the video correctly, but then again it seems to be able to play almost anything. A Google search told me FFDShow could convert it, but I don't have that on the computer. I "do" have the associated Haali media splitter, which produces MKV format (which VS cannot see eithr) but even when I converted it to MKV and played it on VLC it was white with audio. So I gave up...
I also tried Format Factory with no success...

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Hi Guys
I have used Super to convert this to Mov, seemed to work ok.
I am not sure about the quality as I need to check a few render options to get the best.
But Super did convert the file?

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Thanks all for your help !
I will give HD Video Converter Factory Pro a look.
Super does the conversion but is the one that installed all that junk on my PC. I'm not sure that I really want to retry it ...
I confirm, I tried VLC this morning and it does play the MOV and can convert the file but I'm still playing with the various options to get a better output file, skier movements are much less smooth than when I play the MOV directly.
Thanks !

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
Hi Claudio
Yes I have to agree that Super is probably the worst for malware, but you can install without the extras by choosing the Custom Install, then deselect every additional option. Remove all ticks + Cancel, I saw 10 on the first panel.
Any options Decline or Next choose “Decline”
Look for the text “Decline” word at the end of paragraphs, it doesn’t look like a link????
So yes I managed to install without any extras, I guess that choice is yours.
At least you are able to convert the video with some Video Converters?

Re: Importing Apple AIC MOV files
I was able to convert the file and import it into VS.
I tried HD Video Converter Factory Pro which trial version limits conversions to 5' which is more than I needed
Software is very user-friendly and let you reach very quickly the quality you want.
That's finally what I used to solve my issue.
VLC does the conversion pretty well too but I wasn't able to match exactly the output quality of HD Video Converter Pro.
Bigasoft does work fine too but the trial limits the conversion to 1/3rd of the video, so you have to pay it for a full conversion.
Super does also work but be careful when installing and read all screens before pressing a button ...
