Can't play rendered MP4 video

Post by JEFFRO »

Hello,

I'm at wit's end trying to figure this one out. Gopro 3+ video loads and plays fine on laptop.(MP4 60fps) When I render it in MP4 the video flashes momentarily then blank screen with only Audio playing. I have updated Codec's. Windows 7 64 bit. I can render in other format's but I really wanted the 60FPS output. I've been on this for days with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm not sure what you mean by 'updated codecs'... Have you loaded some sort of codec pack like K-Lite? If so, they often cause more problems than they are worth if you load the whole pack, rather than selecting individual codecs.

I ask since I have the Hero 3 Black Edition, though set up for PAL 50 fps. And I don't have trouble editing them in their native mp4 format in either VS X6 or X7 on either Windows 7 or 8.1 (all 64 bit) -- and that's without adding any further codecs to the computer.

Can you confirm that you are using VS X7? Have you tried outputting in 60P AVCHD, which is of course mpeg-4 though rendered using the H.264 codec rather than a 'standard' mpeg-4 codec.

Ken,

Thank you for the quick reply. I am using x7. I only downloaded a group Codec update for Windows Media after I had no luck getting the rendered MP4 files to play. I can render them in other formats and they play fine. I have tried every Mp4 output that x7 will allow with the exact same result, no video only audio. But to reiterate, I can play the MP4 60 fps unaltered files from the GoPro. Here is the list of MP4 files I have tried via x7:

In Settings > Preferences > General, have you ticked the box beside "Show message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline"? If so, when you insert one of your GoPro clips into a clean timeline (File > New Project), do you get a message asking if you want the Project Properties to match those of the clip?

I have just tested this with my own Hero 3 clips, and got the message. This means that when I have finished editing, I can go to Share, and at the very top, directly below the words "Create a video that you can play on a computer", I can tick the box beside "Same As Project Settings". Then I can give the new video a name and click the blue Start button, and a new video will be made of the project with exactly the same video and audio properties as the original -- and the video should play all the way through, as it does on mine.

Ken thanks again for the help. I tried it!! No luck. It reverts back to 30 FPS and makes a terrible looking mpeg!

Those Properties boxes you show are from Windows, not from VS. To get those, please right click on a clip either in the VS timeline or in its library window.

The other thing you can try is to click the down arrow to the right of 'Same As Project Settings", and select Same As First Clip, and then render that. What does that give you?

Preliminary small file test results: "WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!"

I am render a larger file just to make sure. Ken it rendered scary fast under "Same as first click" but produced good looking 60fps video. I really don't under stand it but I really don't care if I do or not. I now think I have success editing full quality GoPro video. Thanks for staying with me on this one, and being so patient. I have some video I'm going to edit for Xmas and didn't know how I was going to get full quality. Now I believe it's solved. I'm still rendering a large file. I'll post right back. Thanks so much Ken!

Ken your my Hero!! Not only does it render but since it doesn't have to convert anything into a different format. It simply spits GB 's of edited video back out in seconds!!

Unless you want me to do or try something else, I'm very happy with this partially working x7 because it now does what I need it to!

No need to try anything else if it is now working. But can you confirm that it worked with "Same as first clip"...

Mind you, I am still mystified why "Same as Project Settings" also did not work... Are you sure you created a New Project first, before you inserted the first clip?

Ken I went back and reclicked "New Project" I then loaded a clip,(MP4 60 fps) edited it and rendered the clip that was 10 seconds long under "Same as project settings". That 10 second clip did render taking 2+ minutes. The output was Mpeg 30FPS. Poor quality video.

I then didn't change a thing, left the clip on the time line and clicked "Same as first video clip" I then re-rendered it. It took less than 10 seconds to render and spit out 60FPS MP4 that is crystal clear.

I still may be doing something wrong somewhere but choosing "Same as first video clip" makes it work like it's suppose to for me!!!!

Weird but I will sleep much better tonight knowing that by video efforts will be seen in very high HD for Christmas.

Thank you so much my underpaid friend!

I went back and reclicked "New Project" I then loaded a clip,(MP4 60 fps)
With the New Project open, the timeline should be empty -- was it? And when you inserted the first clip, you should have got a dialogue box asking if you wanted the Project Properties to match those of the clip == that's if if Preferences > General, the box beside "Show message..." was ticked. Did you tick that box and did you get the message?

But anyway, glad "Same As First Clip" works for you -- just as long as the first clip is always one you want to copy the Properties of!

Ken,

OK I must have missed or didn't understand the, "Show Message" box needed checked. I did that, it now prompts me and I all I have to do is say "yes" when it asks me if I would like to "make the Project properties to match those of the clip. So that also works now! Sorry. I went back and rendered choosing MP4 60FPS but it still switched back to poor quality which is fine as I now can render in 60 FPS in the aforementioned procedure.

Thank you so much!!!
