16:9 to 4:3 trouble
1) I have clip #5 which was captured @ a 4:3 ratio.
2) Clip #6 somehow got captured at @ a 16:9 ratio; or close thereabouts.
3) I need clip #6 to also be 4:3
4) Copy attributes does not solve the issue
5) I can do a manual sizing with the 'Distort Clip' feature
6) Doing step 5 is a very hard way to make the aspect ratio match
Isn't there an easier way to make clip #6 "EXACTLY" 4:3 to match clip #5?

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Hi
Yes you can change the aspect ratio of the video frame from 16:9 to 4:3 ….
1 / Make sure your project properties are set to 4:3 aspect ratio.
2 / Preferences (F6) change the background colour from black, any colour, this will help in identifying the frame area.
3 / double click the 16:9 clip to open the Options panel
4 / Attributes tab – tick Distort Clip
5 / Preview Screen---yellow resize handles show around the frame.
6 / Drag the yellow corner, top right to fill the screens top border (coloured area)
7 / Drag the corner lower left to fill the screen, bottom border
Dragging the corners will keep the shape in proportion.
You will lose some detail left and right.
The frame will show correctly in project mode, clip mode may show the smaller frame?

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble - REMAINS
STILL PROBLEMS. Need some help quickly.
1 > I went through the adjustments as noted above (by mine and lata's posts).
2 > Then I produced an MPEG2 file; [This will ultimately be a DVD video; thus the MPEG2]
3 > My initial intention for making the MPEG2 was to take the MPEG2 into a audio enhancer software program
4 > Before doing the audio work I decided to watch the entire MPEG2 and mark areas that needed audio attention
5 > Much to my surprise the manual changing of a clip from 16:9 to 4:3 had - on it's own - reverted back to 16:9
6 > Now I have to split the MPEG2 clip and work on that area again to make it 4:3
7 > What can I do to make the changes stick and last????????
WHY is the process not locking in?

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Did you set the Project Properties to 4:3? If so, did you then go to Share > Same As Project Properties?
If not, when you went to Share and chose MPEG-2 as the output, did you check the options there? The default is set to 16:9, but if you click on the down-pointing arrow, you will see that the first couple of options have 4:3...

Ken,
1 > So ... all of my answers brings me to the following issue. After I completed the MPEG2 I now have a reduced size video (period) in the preview screen for the entirety of the video - except for the 16:9 section which is distorted.
2 > In an effort to evade rendering a whole new MPEG2 can the following be accomplished on the current MPEG2? [But then again maybe that will be the fastest]:
a > Take the entire current MPEG2 (1:20:00:00) and enlarge it in the preview so that I can can best fill large screen 16:9 television screens; the video will be viewed on today's modern TV widescreens.
b > Additionally zero in on the one clip that has the wide screen distortion to it and correct it.
I've got to finish this problem quickly because I have to prepare it for Christmas presents to be mailed out right away. Thus I need the best speed guidance possible for accomplishing this correction in the next few hours.

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Hi
You are best rendering the entire project again………..
1 / The video seems to be 1 hr 20 minutes, (80 minutes) is that correct?
2 / How long is the widescreen section the 16:9 video clip.?
3 / You are intending to burn a DVD, you are correct that you need a Mpeg2, the file has to fit to disc so has to be less than 4.3 Gb.
Rendering the video requires a data rate of approx 7000 kbps therefore a full render will be required.
4 / Given the further info you are best to make a widescreen 16:9 video.
Your 4:3 video will display ok within the 16:9 frame having black borders left and right.
How
5 / First save the project giving it another name.
6 / Reset your project properties to use Mpeg Files 16:9 with a data rate of 7000kbps
7 / Check the project that the clips display ok, remember to disable distort for that 16:9 clip. Also check any text boxes/titles for position.
8 / render to same as project settings, please double check the settings made in 6 above.
The resultant file has to be less than 4.3 Gb to fit to disc.
Oh and remember to set the background colour to black.............

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Thank you lata,
I agree on a whole new render. I will do that. Now just a couple of curiosity issues so that I know exactly what I'm doing to save more trial and error:
1 > From what I gather (your instructions to me) the video will show on a widescreen TV as a 4:3 ratio; correct?
2 > By setting the new project to 16:9 with 7000kbps I will have black bars on the left and right IF the background is set to black (or any other color I choose); correct?
3 > You asked:
A few final curiosity questions:
1A > Regarding "resampling options". If I choose "Keep Aspect Ratio (No Letterbox)" the video fills the entire Preview Window. Is that the way it would also look on a wide screen TV?
2A > IF SO, why would I not use that setting?
3A > IF that (1A and 2A) is the result then what would I set my project properties at? 16:9 and 7000 kbps also?
I want you to know I greatly appreciate your assistance with all of this. I just want to achieve a good video to watch on widescreen TV's.

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Hi
What version of Video Studio are you using, apologies if I have already asked.
Widescreen view.
Make sure your project properties are using Widescreen 16:9 -- the preview screen will display in 16:9, if you set a different background colour, you will see the frame.
Add one of your 4:3 video files to the timeline. Should display as 4:3 on the preview screen
From Project mode, Edit menu – take a snapshot, that image is how the video will display on your widescreen TV. Do the same for the 16 :9 video and it should fill the screen.
Distort
You set distort when changing the view to 4:3.
Double click the 16:9 video, opens the Options panel, choose Attributes tab—make sure Distort Clip is de-selected.
A few final curiosity answers:
1A-2A-3A
All your clips are now in the top timeline, none are being distorted, they will display ok, the 4:3 will fill the screen vertically, as the image you took above.
You are setting the 4:3 into a 16:9 frame to fill the frame a border is used left and right.
Data Rate aka Bit Rat, the reference to 7000kbps are to render the video reducing the file size to below 4.3Gb, the file will burn to disc without further conversion.
At 8000kbps you will get approx 75 minutes.
Should use Digital Dolby audio, will also keep sizes down
Disc Menu use Thumbnail or Text, --- Smart Menus use more memory.

Re: 16:9 to 4:3 trouble
Hi
Yes you can use the overlay tracks for your video / images, but you will have to resize those manually, well the first clip, then copy and paste attributes to other clips.
That would indeed allow you to add a background to the top track.
Keep Aspect Ratio will stop the video being distorted “out of proportion”, but can be any size within the 16:9 frame
If you drag the corners that will retain the proportions, so Keep aspect Ratio will have no effect.
And yes with the project set to 16:9 that is what you will see on the TV.
You will lose a little around the edges, but that is the TV’s overscan, don’t worry to much about that.
