Saving PSD or single RAW HDR to Tiff....only low dpi/ppi

Post by diente »

I am using X7 currently. I process an HDR created from a single RAW (ORF) file. I then save it as a Tiff. The file resolution is 72 dpi.
I started with a 400dpi image and I would like to keep it at that size or at least 300 dpi. I do a Save As, then choose an uncompressed Tiff, although
it seems to save even a compressed Tiff at 72 dpi. Am I missing something.....any ideas on how to save at higher resolution?

I can create a high res tiff if I use the Olympus RAW processor, and after editing PSP saves it at the same hi resolution, but this precludes the HDR from single RAW photo.

A similar thing happens with PSD files. X7 wont recognize a Tiff created in On One Perfect Suite 8.5, so the On One folks suggested to save files processed
in their program as a PSD. Then I can open it and edit the file in X7 ( and X6 before that). But when I save the file as a Tiff as above, the file is at
96 dpi, (as an uncompressed Tiff).

I'd appreciate any advice.

Question Do you know why you are wanting it at 300 dpi? See the following links:
http://www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html
http://digitaltoolz.blogspot.com.au/200 ... image.html an article by Lesa Snider which also explains it well.

What I did:
1. Dropped a raw image into PSPX7 and it opened in Camera Raw Lab. I did a few adjustments there and then clicked Edit which brought the image into the Edit workspace.
2. Did a couple of adjustments there and then did a Image > Resize. With the Resize Dialog box open I made sure that Advanced settings was ticked . I then unticked Resample using.
3. In the Resolution boxes, I made sure that it read first pixels / inch and then changed the value to 300 and clicked OK
4. Checking the Information (Shift I) shows the Pixels per inch as 300
5. I then did a File > Save As. In Save As dialog box, I changed the Save As type to TIF Tagged Image Format and clicked OK.
6. I closed the workspace image and dropped that saved Tif back into the workspace. Shift I - Image Information shows that Tif as retaining the 300 ppi value.

The defaulte save value was 72 ppi and in step 3 I changed that to 300. That needs to be done each time. Usually that resolution value is only needed if you are printing the image as it has no use for web and monitor usage.

Thanks, hartpaul. I appreciate your response.

I had not gone thru the image resize route, as I was afraid the file might lose something if it was originally downsampled and saved and then upsampled.
Looks like your workflow will not have that problem. I will try it the way you specified.

I desire the higher resolution because I print many (well, a good number) of the pics at 16 x 20 inches. Also some periodicals requested minimum 300 dpi....one publisher asked that i send 400 dpi if possible. Though I thought that a little overkill, who am I to question the longtime publisher.

Thanks again for your help.
