Which capture card

Post by mmponline1 »

I recntly upgraded to Windows 8.1, only to find out that it does not support Firewire anymore. With some workarounds with older drivers, I can capture with firewire, but the process is slow and frustrating. Unfortunately my Sony camera does not have SD and is such an excellent broadcast quality camera that I don't want to replace it. I'm now considering upgrading to HDMI to PCI express card to get away from firewire. Some issues though:

Anyone knows of a way to get Wirewire working properly in Windows 8?
What card should do the job? I see there are many (especially gaming capture) card in the market.
I need to capture direct from VS and not via separate capturing software. So the new card should be recognised as a device by VS.
I also would like to capture via Windows Movie Maker as I use it for fast live recordings and immediate playback. (BTW - In windows 8 Movie Maker only sees the card, but not audio)

Any suggestions or maybe other options? I also looked at HDMI to USB2 or 3, but these cards seem to only work wit its own software and not with VS.

Any help would be appreciated.

I also used WMM to capture DV.
I think WMM2.6 will install on W8

What is the make/model of your Sony camcorder?

Never heard of "HDMI to PCI express card" or " HDMI to USB2 or 3"
