PSP x7 and ASP2 use a different rating repository. Why?

Post by bobmcswain »

I purchased ASP2 to handle my Nikon Raw images. I rated each image.

Since I was using PSP X5, I decided to upgrade to PSP X7.

I was sure 2 products from the same company would use the same methodology in its files ... ie rating db. ASP2 uses an XML file for each image (another problem). Best I can tell PSP X7 creates a single DB for all files.

WHY? Can we expect a unified approach to DAM?

The two programs have different sources and thus totally different organization and programming. PSP started as Jasc and ASP was developed by Bibble, then purchased by Corel. PSP does not pretend it has a DAM, it does have rating and tags. ASP's data handling is far better. I know that tags get transferred from ASP to PSP but am not sure if the ratings survive the jump.

A rating set in ASP will be transferred to PSP if you use 'Edit with External Editor'.

A rating set in ASP will be written to a JPG when it is 'rendered' i.e. output in ASP2.

A rating set in ASP and held in the XMP file associated with the RAW image will not be picked up by PSP and other programs.

Any rating set in PSP or any other program will be picked up in ASP.
