convert a photo to a B&W line image

Post by raypeltzman1 »

Hi, I just purchased Paint Shop Pro X7 for the express use as a photo editor to create scroll saw patterns. This version is completely different than the versions used in online tutorials. Can some one describe the basic steps to reduce a photo to basically a B&W line drawing.? I've been using gimp so I think I understand the basic concepts. I just need a little help getting started. Thanks, Ray

Do you have a tutorial you like? Maybe we can convert it.

Also, depending on how old the version of PSP is for the most part I'm able to use tutorials even going as far back as PSP 9. There are differences you'll have to work around but you shouldn't have too much trouble. And if there is something specific you're looking for bring both the tutorial and where you're stuck and we can help with that as well.

To answer your question there are a number of options. One of the simplest would be to use one of the built in effects from the Effects menu.

The way I'm going to try and show you is also very simple. In fact it's pretty common everywhere.

When you see "Image -> Greyscale" that's referring to the Image Menu, and select Greyscale from the menu.

1)Image -> Greyscale

2) In the Layers Palette (if you can't see the layers palette you can open it from the View menu. View -> Palettes -> Layers) right-click on the image and select "Duplicate" from the context menu.

3) Select the top layer (the new Copy of the layer we made) And select Image -> Negative Image

4) On the Layers palette set the blend mode to "Dodge" (you can play with others but I think Dodge works best)

5) Use one of the blur options, Gaussian or Average works well. Adjust -> Blur -> Gaussian

6) Adjust the gaussian until you have a line art the way you want it.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I'll try your suggestion. Tutorials I watched were on YouTube, I'll search for them and post the links. Thanks again.
