What did you use to convert the mkv file

why did you choose a strange output format why not just mpeg-2

MPEG-2 TS (Transport Stream) files are Blu-Ray compatible HD mpeg-2, though as we know when we choose MPEG Transport Stream as an output option in VS, it can also be configured to produce AVCHD mpeg-4 which is a subset of MPEG TS.

So yes, VS can certainly accept and output mpeg TS files. I have never used xilisoft's converter, but depending on your computer, I would probably use it to convert MKV to AVCHD as it will produce more compressed files which are smaller than mpeg-2 TS files.
