Lost save/share format

Post by Putt Putt 4 Video »

Yesterday I saved/shared a video to format Custom MPG .mpg, which output these properties..3.83GB, 1:36:52, 1280x720, 6000kbps, 29fps, stereo, 48khz. They are just what I wanted but I had to do I more edit. When I went to save the revised version I could not find the same format in custom or anywhere. The important missing spec is the 1280x720. Can you say what has happened? Daryl

I don't think your "custom mpg" format was in 1280x720dimension but simply in a 720x480 or 720x576dimension.

Hi Daryl

The properties you show are from Windows Folders not Video Studio timeline, but do identify the video as Mpg4.

Try using Make Movie Template Manager to create a new template , use the Add option, search for your video, if that works the template will be available from Share Create Video File, to the bottom of the list.

Did you intend creating a Mpeg4 video file.

Maybe you can give the properties of the original videos on the projects timeline.

And what are you trying to make, I notice your video is nearly 100 minutes long?

I make oral history videos among others. Some are unlisted. My channel @ https://www.youtube.com/user/PuttPutt4video Sample oral history video at http://youtu.be/J4WeJs33ACw
I usually save in three formats. HQ for archives on a hard drive, DVD for the subjects home viewing on a DVD disc and best upload time vs quality for YouTube and a hard copy save. The material cannot be recreated identically. I was looking at all the alternatives with this video due to its length and chose this option as it retained full 16x9 @30fps and at a max 6000kbps hoped it would be small enough to fit on a 4.7GB disc and it met that criteria. I only got in to trouble when I tried to save the corrected version and could not find where that was. I’m a 79 year old amateur and still finding my way around Corel so all tips are welcome. Do I understand you correctly that I can create or find that template via the template manager? Guess our replies are crossing.
Original video properties below. Thanks again Daryl

Hi

I like your You Tube channel, just watching the Budgie video, took me back to my childhood.
I have subscribed to your channel……..

Thanks for providing the details of your workflow using Video Studio, I understand what you are now doing, you should not have any problems.
Your original video file uses MTS (Motion Transport Stream), the properties of these video files are Bluray compliant, that is we can burn these to a Bluray disc without re-coding, you get the original quality on disc, and that has to be good. Yes I realise you do not have a Bluray burner but you may consider that.

First I want you to create a template using Settings Make Movie Templates Manager, the manager panel is similar to setting the Custom panel, except you can use the ADD option, then choosing your original video will copy those properties to use for the template.
Once created will be available from Share – Create Video File adjacent to the Custom option.
If you have problems using the templates manager there is a tutorial here, instructions for New and Add options:- http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/manager/manager.htm
You will create a template to these settings:-

MPEG Transport-Stream Files (remember Transport Stream )
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-NTSC), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 16999 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

You mention wishing to
1 / Archive the footage
2 / Convert for YouTube
3 / Convert for DVD Disc

There should be no problems in doing this.

1 / Archive the footage

Your original video files use video that is BD (Bluray Disc) compliant, as such you should create a video file using the same properties as the original, once created will be saved to your hard drive as a backup/archive.

After completing the project editing go to Share Create Video File to find your template at the bottom of the list, other options may be Same as First Clip, provided that your first clip in the timeline is one of your original. With the Create Video File window open, view the Properties details in the lower panel, just to confirm they are the settings required.
You can if you wish using the mouse to highlight the text, copy and paste to a word doc to view in full.
Pressing Save will start the render process, the resulting file is your full quality archive file.

If there is anything above that confuses please ask, hopefully I have described correctly?

2 / Convert for YouTube

Start a new project

Import the Archive video file to the timeline
Share – Upload to Web – You Tube – Mpeg4 HD 16:9

This will create a video file suitable for You Tube using these settings:-

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

When complete cancel the YouTube upload, play the file on your pc to check quality.
Log-On to your YT account and upload the video.

A 6 minute video will be approximately 205Mb

Controlling the Data Rate 5000kbps will affect the files size, but also impact on quality.
As a test use Make Movie Templates Manager to create another template using a different data rate?
Comparing quality against files sizes, which affects upload times.

3 / Convert to Mpeg2 for DVD Disc

Start a new project

Import the Archive video file to the timeline
Share Create Video File – DVD – DVD Video16:9
This will create a compliant video file suitable for burning a DVD, however you will be best to create your own template using Make Movie Templates Manager to these settings:-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Controlling the Data Rate 8000kbps will affect the files size, but also impact on quality.
At 8000kbps you will get 75 minutes (Max) to a standard 4.3Gb disc. Full Quality
At 6000kbps you will get approx 90 minutes ---Good Quality
At 4000kbps you will get approx 120 minutes --- VHS Quality

The completed video file Mpeg2 will be approx 4.3 gb and should fit to disc.
Play the file to check quality.

To Burn a Disc

Start a new project, nothing in the timeline.
Share Create Disc DVD - Opens the burner module.
Top left icon Add Media – Add video file choosing the video created above.
Choosing to create a Thumbnail or Text menu does not use as much memory as using a Smart Scene menu, can help if your files are on the limit to fit to disc.

Hope that makes sense for you?

Trevor,

Hi and thank you so very much for the sub and the information. I saw the sub notice first and watched your stoates but did not connect you to this forum although some of the video uploads made me think it was a bit of a coincidence.

It will likely take me a few days to work through this although your instructions look very clear.

Were you able to come to a conclusion as to how I got that MPEG 2 video with those properties. It's great but where did it come from?

Hopefully I will get back to you with two thumbs up.

Had a couple of long odds coincidences lately so I have to ask if you are near Cheshire/Chester/Frodsham? Too complicated to explain here but I can send something in a few days if you like.

Thanks again, Daryl.

Hi

The 1280 x 720 framesize for Mpeg2 is not standard for burning a DVD, as such Video Studio cannot create that combination. The total frames of 174273 also seem strange, calculate to quite a long movie, view the duration?

You have not use another Video Converter to create that clip

My thoughts are that Video Studio is struggling to read the clips properties correctly?

I have looked through all templates and am unable to do that, so cannot explain why you were able to do that, strange.

Trevor,
In reply to your most recent message, it is as you say strange indeed.
I guess there is no need or purpose in trying to find out how this clip came to be particularly as it is almost identical to the “upload to web” template but here for your information is a bit more detail with some parts that reply specifically to your notes.
The video is long, 01:37:00 and definitely done on Corel Video Studio Pro X6
I can tell you for sure that I was not choosing for DVD burning compatibility.
I was aiming for 1280x720, 16x9, 4000-6000kbps, 30fps, and not to exceed 4GB and compatible in all respects.
It plays very well on Corel, Media player classic, Windows media player and VLC media player. I did not try any others.
My notes say I was choosing from a Custom MGEG option list (not MPEG 4) and the output properties is showing as MPEG 2. The only MPEG2 mentions I see are DVD and of course 720x480. Have to admit it is possible that I got distracted and chose from another option.
In trying to create a template from the video clip it was rejected as “not compatible”.
However, I could edit the clip and save with the same properties using “save as first clip”.
I also tried adding a minute of it to the front of an archive format clip “MPEG transport stream etc” and used “save as first clip” which it did just fine producing a 1280x720 MPEG2 file with the same properties as the one in question for the whole video.
So unless you want me to send you a bit of the video,- and you would have to tell me how much and how to do that,- I guess that is all.
Thanks very much again.
Daryl.
PS-Part of the reason I was playing with formats is that 720x480 (about 14x9) seems to alter the aspect ration of some photos inserted into a video saved as 16x9 enough to be objectionable. Usually it is a photo with some parallax problems to start with one of which was in this video.

... the output properties is showing as MPEG 2. The only MPEG2 mentions I see are DVD and of course 720x480.
But of course there are other mpeg-2 formats included in VS... MPEG Transport Stream is the general name, and it is an mpeg-2 family chiefly associated these days with high definition Blu-Ray mpeg-2. But when using the h.264 AVCHD codec producing AVCHD mpeg-4, strangely enough that is technically included in the mpeg-2 transport stream family as well. And of course 1280 x 720 was one of the original frame sizes for that format, and remains so. Indeed, 1280 x 720 at 50/60P is still the only 50/60P format which fits within the current international standard for Blu-Ray discs. All clear as mud...?

If you are just referring to the quote its pretty clear. If replying to the whole thread not so clear but I really appreciate the information. Daryl
