Crash on only one type of Capture in VS9

Post by jgc »

I've been using MSP6 for some time, but now have switched to VS9 now that I need to teach video editing to kids.

I can capture OK using MSP, WinDV, and the "DV Quick Scan" part of VS9, but it always crashes when I select the main "Capture Video" part of VS9.

OS: Win2K SP4 complete with latest patches
Source: DV type over Firewire
VS9 project properties: DV PAL etc.

Now, it did work OK after first installing VS9, and running as an Administrator-level user. But then I switched to a lower-privilege account (I'm letting kids loose on this PC, OK? :o ) that is a 'Power User' and the odd behaviour above started. I then go back to trying it under the administrator-level account and it still crashes in this one way.

Has anyone got any leads on this problem, please?

Try logging in as the less-priviledged user and using Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> UVS -> Change/Remove, and select Repair when the Installer starts up.

Ah - that sounds like a good idea.
Unfortunately, when I come to try it, the Ulead installer refuses to let me get to the uninstall/repair screen, as the account doesn't have Administrator privileges!
And when I go back to the Administrator account I find it doesn't have a repair option at all, just a "completely remove ..." one.

You probably have an ESD (Electronic Sofware Download) version then. Unfortunately, the Repair option is only available in the boxed version (both retail and upgrade).

I do recall seeing a recommendation to use an Administrative or Power User account when installing, but I don't know if you need those priviledges just to run the program afterwards. Try setting up a Power User account and see if that works -- I know it's not ideal given your situation, but it's better than giving the kids full admin rights.

You're right: I went for the cheaper download option.

The lower privilege account is already at 'Power User' level; from earlier work with MSP I found that it wouldn't run sensibly at just 'User' level.

I have reported this to tech support but as far as I know, no solution has been found.

My OS is also Win 2k??????????

I reinstalled it two days ago and got the problem back.
At the moment i have uninstalled the windows installer.

Thanks for the tips about the MSI 3.1 problems. I've checked, and I was running v2 of MSI 3.1 before loading VS9, so that seems not to be the cause of the problem.

(Although I do wonder whether it fixes things for WinXP and not Win2K?)

Having de-installed and re-installed several times, it now seems to always be crashing on the second attempt on any user to do capture, or on simply trying to access the Tools | Change Capture Plugin ... option. But it still works OK when using the DV Quick Scan option. And is still OK in other programs like WinDV. :?:

I have exactly the same problem. Crash after trying to capture the second time after installing. No repair option. I am an administrator. Uninstall/reinstall allows capture once. Second time total crash. VS8 and WinDV work fine. Help!
