Combining 2 different images onto 1 canvas

Post by eric99 »

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to take two images and put one in the upper half of a newly created 8.5x11" canvas and the other on the bottom. This is driving me nuts. I'm using PSP Pro X7

I create the canvas: 8.5x11 300dpi
Image 1 is resized to 5x5 300 dpi
Image 2 is resized to 5x5 300 dpi

Yet when I copy and paste them onto the canvas they are different sizes. I would expect them to be the same width and height on the canvas.

Is this a bug or a feature? Seems as if the resizing doesn't work as it should. I resize to 5x5 300dpi. When I go to resize it again It's showing as 7x7 and 56dpi? What gives there?

I have an image I resized to 5x5 300dpi and it doesn't resize on the screen.

Kind of frustrated here as what should be an easy job is taking all day and getting nowhere.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Eric

5 inches at 300 dpi = 1500 pixels.
Make sure you are resizing using the Pixel section rather than the print section and set your width and height to 1500 each.
Then before you copy and paste as new layer make sure each image is 1500 square (check bottom right near the task bar).

Eric:

I did exactly as you described. I used the Print section at the top of Resize, setting each image to 5x5 inches with 300 dpi. To confirm, the number of pixels in the Pixel dimensions was correct.

I pasted the two pictures as layers onto the background and they were both the same proportions. If I select one of the resized images it shows 5x5 at 300 dpi as the starting point, so everything worked as it should.

So, what is happening between the time you do the resize and when you want to use the picture? In my case, I had the new background and the two resized pictures all open at the same time in Edit. I selected each picture, Edit/copy an Edit/Paste as new layer onto the background without saving anything in between. Is this what you did? I'm at a loss as to why your process works differently. One question - do your pictures have layers? In the resize tool do you have resize all layers ticked in the Advanced settings at the bottom?

Wouldn't a copy and paste as a new layer work just as well?
Then use the 'pick' tool to resize each layer! Or Image/Resize and uncheck the 'Resize all layers'.

I'm not at my work computer now so I can't confirm my brains thought train!!!

Thanks Everyone. I'm not sure what I did yesterday to cause that. I tried it again this morning and got the results you all did (so far because I started out with my problem) with one exception. The prints are smaller when you use copyspecial->Copy for desktop printing: Screenshot attached.
Copy vs CopySpecial->Copy For Desktop Printing
Copy vs CopySpecial->Copy For Desktop Printing
Couldn't get the Corel screenshot to work. I set the hotkey at Alt-F12 and all I got was a Save As Dialog box.

Anyway, I thank you all for taking the time to respond. If it happens again I'll screenshot every step and post it.

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!

If you check your Keyboard map under the Help Menu you will find that F5 is available to be used as a hotkey.

Using the 'pick' tool to resize I would not trust that I could get identical sizes for the two images, if that is important. The ruler is a guide but not precise. Resizing first gives identical results.

As far as I can tell, the 'copy special' for desktop or email resizes the image to make it more manageable when you need a smaller size, for example, if you want to paste into an email. For what you are doing, stick to Copy, then Paste as new layer.
