MF4 will not eject DVD / CD after burning

Post by tjhunter »

I run the latest versions of MF4 & VS9 and use a HPDVD Writer 420i.
After sucessfully creating and burning a DVD with these programs my DVD tray will not open until I restart WinXP. Annoying. When I restart I find all my data burned correctly. Why?

What happens if you exit all programs then open up explorer,
Right-Click on the dvdrecorder and select "Eject"

I have tried that but the same thing happens. If I persist "My Compter" will stop responding and I have to use "Task Manager" to exit it. Eventually "Windows Explorer" hangs up and I have to do a manual shutdown.

looks like data-add is causing this. try opening my computer and right click on you burner. select properties and go to the Data-Add tab. there are two checkboxes; uncheck the one that refers to "eject" (sorry not in my comp right now).

if you did not install data-add then its something else... :D

Is the HPDVD writer an actual program?
Usually the default options in Ulead Products is to eject the disk.
There are options usually under "Advanced" when burning not to eject
the disk.

If your using Data-Add or Quick-Drop (MovieFactory 4) you can uninstall
them one at a time to see if those programs are causing something.

I would first look at the HP software if there is a HP software writing program.
You shouldn't need to load the HP software for the burner to work with
other programs. Check to see if HP is loading "Packet Writing" software.
That's when you can put a DVD-RW or DVD+RW in, format it and
drag files to the drive using explorer (you probably know that).
The packet writing software with all programs cause problems because they
monitor the burner in order to update the disk before ejecting it.

Nero uses "InCd"
Roxio uses "Drag To Disk"
MovieFactory 4 uses "Quick-Drop"
Does HP also have their own?

I've un-installed packet writing programs from my machine although I've
haven't encouter any problems with Neros's InCD (probably lucky).

I did have a machine with that problem and I use to unplug the power
connector from the back of the writer to cycle it on and off.
Wouldn't reccommend for someone to do that though.

Also I wouldn't install "The latest burning engine" or Ulead Burner updates.
The correct distribution of those files are distributed with VideoStudio 9 and
MF4. Only do that if Ulead Tech Support advises it. Those burner updates
can cause more problems. They are mainly for the older ulead programs and
burners.
(Don't get the burner engine update confused with a program update).

Thanks for the help: Yes HP provides a variety of software in HP DVD Burn, including lite versions of Muvee and Arc Soft showbiz, both of which I upgraded but ended up using MF 3 as the better program for my needs. I have now uninstalled both those programs but until I find my HP install disc I don't want to remove HPDVD Burn. It does have other parts to it like a back up and record now function I use sometimes but it can only handle file names up to 110 characters (includes the whole path). I did not see a drag and drop function listed or a data add tab but I disabled eject in the properties menu.
As for the updting burner engine - you are right there, I made that mistake with MF3 and suffered.
I don't know if you realized it but the joliet in MF4 seem to take unlimited long filenames which makes using copy, not back up, easier, as I tend to get carried away labelling photos and home movie clips.
I am also waiting for a replacement cd from Ulead for my MF4 Disc creator cd on demand. The one I recieved does not function so I cannot reload the program if something goes wrong and the program as installed still works fine except for the eject problem.

Record Now........ Thought that was packet writing software.
Something similar to the "Sonic, Record Now" maybe.

Time consuming to fix these conflicts, good luck

Do you also have a copy of nero on your computer?

Sometimes I get a DVD / CD where the tray refuses to open.
I then load Nero and use the option in that program to eject CD and most times it works.

You are right. I believe HP Record Now is the same program. As for Nero, I never had it. I had to remove Roxio CD Creator last year on Ulead support staff instructions when I had problems with MF 3. Later when they analyzed my system they still found traces of it on my system. Some software just does not want to give up.
I will remove HP DVD Burn as soon as I find my install disc and that should solve my problem.
Thanks for your help.

I think some HP burn software includes Sonic Recordnow and Sonic DLA. DLA is also a packet writing program. try to check if you have that prog.
