Copy toolbars to new installation of X3
I'm using PSP X3. I just bought a new computer, and I have installed PSP on the new computer. How do I copy my toolbars over from the old computer? I'm not asking about the mechanics of copying from one computer to another (I've already done that). Rather, what I need to know is which file contains the customization information from my old computer (toolbars, etc.), and which directory I should copy that file into.
I tried finding this information in Corel's knowledge base and couldn't.
One more question: I stopped updating PSP when Corel changed it so that I couldn't use my normal Windows "skin" colors. Has that changed with X7, or is Corel still forcing that limitation on its users?
Thanks!

You could have saved your "Workspace" and then copied the "filename.PspWorkspace" file onto your new computer. Once you have your toolbars customized, go to File > Workspace > Save. Make note of where you save the file so that you can keep a backup copy in a safe place. Also, remember to save it again whenever you make any changes to it.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16
Re: Copy toolbars to new installation of X3
So the toolbars are saved in the workspace file? That's helpful. Thank you!
Isn't the workspace saved every time I exit PSP?
What about the "skin" color in PSP X7? Are they still forcing users to have some variation of gray, black or blue? (I think blue was one of the colors.)

X7 has charcoal, medium grey and light grey which looks more like a beige to me. You can always download a trial version to check this out.CMurd wrote:So the toolbars are saved in the workspace file? That's helpful. Thank you!

I believe PSP should remember the workspace each time it closes but sometimes it doesn't. To be safe, whenever making changes always save the workspace.
When moving to a new computer, copy ALL the files in C: Documents / Corel PaintShop Pro / 13 / all files and paste them into the same position on the new computer. This way all your files will be visible. Remember to check File Locations.
As for the workspace, yes it is saved in the folder Workspaces and you can access it on your new computer / PaintShop Pro / File / Workspace. Good luck!

Thank you.
It still boggles my mind that Corel is forcing its customers to use THEIR colors instead of the Windows colors that the customer wants. I see no reason to ever upgrade from X3.

Re: Copy toolbars to new installation of X3
What colors would you want.
Bear in mind that if you have a white background images will appear desaturated, and any other color will give the eye a false impression of the colors of the images. ie if you had a red background (too much red) then your eye would find it difficult to detect a red cast in an image (or is it a green cast??
). Corel has used neutral colour backgrounds so that the images can be seen in their true colors and not have color bias applied by the user which later gets blamed on the program.

This is tortured logic. If I don't like the three "skin" colors that Corel is allowing me to use on PSP, then I don't like them. Discussion over.hartpaul wrote:What colors would you want.

In my opinion, Corel is doing a lot of things wrong with PSP. They keep adding bells & whistles of the type that few people use, while the basic editing tools are not being improved. Look at "Local Tone Mapping", a feature which was much better named when it was called "Clarify". It doesn't work subtly enough. It increases in increments of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc. You would think that since there is a decimal point with a zero after the number, you could put in something like "0.5" or "1.5", but you can't -- if you do that, the program crashes. I'd rather that they fix something like that than give me connectivity to some new device that I'm not using and will never use.
Actually, since I'm using X3, I don't know if they've fixed Local Tone Mapping -- maybe they have. I do know that they didn't fix it in X4 or X5, which I downloaded and tried. I'll try X7, but I still resent the limitation on the skin colors.

Ah well.

, perhaps I should not tell you that you can get decimal points by holding the Control key down and clicking on the up and down arrows in X3.discussion over

Re: Copy toolbars to new installation of X3
That's a useful bit of information -- and I appreciate your giving it to me -- but it only shows me how poorly the program is designed that you can't just type in the number that you want. The box appears to be a text-entry box where a number can be typed, but apparently it isn't.hartpaul wrote:perhaps I should not tell you that you can get decimal points by holding the Control key down and clicking on the up and down arrows in X3.
What about this bug: Having the Preview box checked for any tool makes X3 crash. This was happening on my 5-year-old computer, and it is now happening on my brand-new top-of-the-line computer from Hewlett-Packard.
==============
Woops, you were wrong about Tone Mapping. If I set it at 0.9 using the Control key, no change occurs. The changes start at 1.0. For me, the problem with Tone Mapping is that 1.0 is too strong for many of the pictures I'm adjusting, yet the settings 0.1 through 0.9 don't seem to register in any way. I'll be installing X7 within a day. Maybe they have fixed the problem.

Re: Copy toolbars to new installation of X3
I'm now trying Local Tone Mapping in X7. As with X3, there are no gradations between 0.0 and 0.9 -- in other words, 0.9 looks just like 0.0. Over 1.0, the gradations start to show -- but since 1.0 is too strong for me (in most instances), the tool remains mostly useless. One advantage in X7 is that typing a number directly into the box doesn't cause the program to crash, as it does in X3. However, in X7 there is an added feature (in the LTM dialogue box) called "Block Size". I can't find any explanation of what Block Size is in the Help files, and I can't figure it out by using it on my own.
So Corel has not fixed the Local Tone Mapping feature as I hoped they would. As I said, Corel should stop focussing on the bells & whistles and fix the basic editing tools.
HOWEVER, I see that there is now a Clarity tool in X7 which I don't have in X3, and that tool does indeed clarify the picture in a very pleasing way, and in subtle gradations.
I also see that using the Preview function isn't making the program crash, as it does in X3. The Clarity tool and the greater stability may be enough for me to upgrade to X7. However, I still don't like my choice of "skins" in X7.
