I don't know how VS "told" you to produce mpeg-2 to play on your TV... but yes, just about every modern HDTV will play mpeg-4, regardless of whether it is produced using AVCHD/h.264 or another mpeg-4 format. I regularly produce AVCHD .m2ts files which play on my 6 year old Samsung 46" HDTV, and also videos from my GoPro Hero 3 Black which are .mp4, and they also play. And both formats produce excellent quality...

In my X7, when I choose mpeg-2 as the output, it says (in English): "Create compressed video files idea for storing on DVDs, This format is recommended for projects that you want to save to discs at a later time using the Create disc option." There is no mention of playback on TV.

I can play mpg videos on my TVs (Sony and Samsung) via a USB stick.
I mostly use a WD Media player connected to my TVs to play videos. That device can play almost everything I throw at it.
