Can't create dual layer disks
I recently purchased videostudio pro x7. I installed it on a NEW 64 bit Windows 8.1 machine. I can successfully create AVCHD Memorex dvd-r 4.7 discs at maximum speed. When I try create large files and put them on Memorex DVD+R 8X dual layer discs,( at 4x) Part way thru the multiplexing, it stops and then I get an unspecified error [5] 0. I have been working with a corel rep. to no avail. -I installed the program on a newly built 32 bit machine running vista. Same problem. It has 2 different dvd/rw drives. I get the same error on either drive. I am going to try dual layer disks from another co. Other than that I'm at a loss

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Can we assume that in the burning module, you specified you were burning to a dual layer 8 GB disc? Otherwise it defaults to single layer...
But I have to add that few users here over the years have succeeded in burning dual layer discs with successive versions of Video Studio...

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Hi
I am in the same opinion as Ken, I gave up on using Dual Layer discs because of playback problems. Not sure if the crossover from the two layers is the problem.
That was using Mpeg2 Standard DVD, I did not try Avchd with DL as Hybrid ???
Now I have updated to using Bluray – no problems.
How long is your movie, you can fit about 90 minutes to a standard DVD disc if you render using 6000kbps, avchd is a different matter...
If your source files are HD then upgrade your system to use Bluray.

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
When I did the burn, I set it for 8.5 dual layer, slowed the burn to 4x, cleared the temp files from previous burn. The last AVCHDfile was 5.3 gb, 1 hr. and two minutes. I can make it smaller and it burns fine on a regular 4.7 disc, at maximum speed.. Or I can take the AVCHD file, and burn it to the DVD format. It burns fine. When I tried to make a 2nd copy, with dual layer disc, I get unspecified error 5 [0]. When, I tell it to create AVCHD folders, instead of creating a disc, it does that successfully. (or so, it says). The corel tech rep. has suggested that I do this and then use imgburn, or nero to put it on a dual layer disk. I fail to see why, after spending this money to buy a program to utilize AVCHD, I need to buy another program, to burn the results. I am using Memorex discs. I am going to try a different brand. If that doesn't work, I suppose I will take you r suggestion, and purchase a Blu ray burner, and try that.

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Hi
Last year I upgraded my cameras to use HD, a Panasonic 900 series
I have gone through the same processes as you, creating AVCHD hybrid discs worked fine but limits movie lengths. I must admit I did not try Dual Layer with Avchd, I had used DL without success with my older Standard DVD 4.3 gb discs.
Anyway This is my workflow….
1 / I edit the project Avchd files
2 / Convert project Share Create Video File –Same as First Clip –creates a Avchd / Bluray compatible file.
3 / I play the file to check quality
4 / I burn that file to Bluray Folder, (BDMV) no re-coding of the file in the burner module, the file being used is compliant.
5 / Play the Bluray Folder (BDMV) again to check quality, may need media player to play the menu structure, don’t think there is a free player out there.
6 / Burn the BDMVto disc using ImgBurn, that program is free.
Bluray discs are quite expensive so checking the process ensures a good burn, no coasters.
I have never tried burning the BDMV to Dual Layer, maybe ImgBurn will do that.????
I will have a look at the program?

ImgBurn is also freeware. But make sure you read its instructions before using it...

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Can you clarify whether it was just the dual layer aspect which ImgBurn could not handle, or could it not burn from an AVCHD folder at all? It is certainly supposed to do that. If it couldn't, could you also confirm whether or not, on the 'Settings' tab of ImgBurn, you verified that the 'File System' was "UDF", and the the 'UDF Revision' was "2.50"?

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Hi Ken
I will test again, but did not want to ruin a disc.
Image Burn did not recognise the disc, not sure if that was because of the Avchd + Dual Layer combination.
Just had a quick look and it may have been a user error, that’s me, I think I may have placed a BD disc in the CD Rom drive, clearly that wont read the BD. On the face of it they look the same.
Upps
Even so I had lots of problems using Dual Layer discs, guess it’s a good test to see if ImgBurn will do the job.
As for ImgBurn settings, the program is quite friendly and prompts you when using wrong settings, which is good.
I’ll come back with more results.

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Hi Ken / dhartwig
I have been successful in burning a Avchd using ImgBurn to Dual Layer Disc 8.5 Gb
My earlier tests were wrong as I had used a Bluray disc rather than a Dual Layer.
Sorry for the confusion. I purchase printable discs, those don’t have any text/logo on the face.
DVD Identifier does a good job in showing the disc info.
The disc type is DL: Ritek –S04
I have not had time as yet to play the disc on my TV system but looks ok on the pc.
Regards Trevor

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Thanks for the clarification... though of course Blu-Ray discs also come in much more expensive dual layer versions too, not just DVDs. Mind you, the only one I have is an $85 Sony Rewritable one!!!I had used a Bluray disc rather than a Dual Layer.

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
I am a bit confused here.
I am getting ready to edit my photos and video clips (1080p, 60fps) of my Sony camera from my recent trip to India. I was planning to create VS bluray folders (BDMV) with VS Share/create disc feature, then burn it on dual layer 50G disc using ImgBurn (I'm going Bluray 50G Dual Layer to avoid having my resulting video on multiple discs if I use 25G single layer discs or AVCHD on DVD discs).
Do I understand that I am on unchartered grounds by trying this ? Do I understand that, to your knowledge, no one has been successful in doing this with VSX7 ?
Thanks !
Guy

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Hi
Confused me there Guy…………
First if you are burning a Bluray or DVD you have to use 29.97 or 25fps, Bluray 1920 x 1080 only uses that.
You cannot burn a 1920 x 1080 60P, not the industries standards.
From your project, open in the timeline do Share Create Video File AVCHD
That creates a compliant video file suitable for burning a disc.
To burn the disc…….
Start a new project – Share create disc Bluray –insert Media – Insert Video choosing the new file.
Dual Layer discs, some people have problems in burning to Dual Layer, unfortunately the ones that don’t have problems don’t post here.
I had trouble using DL DVD, so don’t use any more, certainly I have not used 50g discs. 25 have been large enough for me.
The recent test did burn a DVD DL 8.5Gb using ImgBurn, and that’s as much as I know.

Re: Can't create dual layer disks
Thanks Trevor for taking the time to input!
You're right that the VSX7 output file will be 30fps .I should have been more precise by saying that my camera can/will take a 60fps video clip (to assist if slow motion is required at edit) .
I tried it this morning and VSX7 takes my 1080p 60fps video clips and, thru VSX7 Share/ Create disc/ Bluray , will produce a BDMV folder with .m2ts stream files at 30fps. I know from experience that burning a dual layer DVD will work with VSX7 and ImgBurn, but I have not burned yet a Bluray dual layer ( but I will in upcoming weeks when my travel video project will be finished). I was just trying to find someone in the forum that have burned successfully a project on a Bluray (not a DVD) 50G Dual Layer
Any one out there who did ?
Thanks !
