Hello.. this appears to be an older thread that I found searching for "shadow around images."

Today I upgraded from X4 to X7, and find shadows around every image.. in EDIT Mode in both tabbed and untabbed, in ADJUST mode, and in MANAGE/Organizer Thumbnails. It's driving me nuts and appears as a BLUR! I usually like everything SHARP, and also having trouble with my old eyeglasses (reading glasses broke) so this is making things more difficult.

The only workaround, it seems, is to set the background color to DARK GRAY or BLACK, but the ORGANIZER thumbnails in both MANAGE and EDIT mode still have a medium gray background and shadows around them!!

Will probably have to get used to it! This issue can be categorized as a "lack of settings, features, or customizability."

Whereas what I referred to in my previous post is this:

Am I getting close to your problem?
Now I'm getting the dreaded `crack´ around the workspace for the first time!! (JPG image)

Image

The workaround for the `crack´ is to set-up a TABBED button in the toolbar to `cycle´ view.

These are Organizer Thumbnails with shadows, and black filenames that are blurry. (Lossless 1:1 scale PNG image)

Image

The thumbnail background color isn't changeable, so thumbnails will have a pronounced shadow effect.

These appear to be GUI growing pains? or minor incompatibilities?

I have noticed the same thing - i.e., when the window is bigger than the image then the image looks as if it has a gradient drop shadow all around it, and it is visible unless you select black as your window background color. I usually work with the window set to fit to the image so rarely see it, but when I do see it I find it irritating because, if I did have my own drop shadow on my image, I wouldn't know if I was seeing my created shadow or the one that always appears anyway. I would call this a bug and hope somebody from Corel might see this and provide an explanation.

That shadow effect started in X6. Just checked in the earlier versions that I have and none of the earlier ones up to 5 have it. As well they do not allow the background color to be changed and that started in X6.
I think it was brought in to give a 3d effect to the display of the images.
AS already mentioned working with Window fits Image and untabbed documents you do not see that effect.
if I did have my own drop shadow on my image, I wouldn't know if I was seeing my created shadow or the one that always appears anyway
Try it and you will find that you get no confusion between a true drop shadow and that minor drop shadow at the edge of the canvas.
Take an image that is say 800 pixels on the long side, copy and paste to a white or light grey canvas that is say 1000 pixels on the long side so you can see parts of the canvas all around your image. Apply a drop shadow to the pasted image and you will see the difference between the drop shadow and the 3d effect around your canvas.
I don't think you can display a drop shadow around your canvas unless it has a larger canvas to show it on. So the drop shadow effrect and the canvas 3d effect will never intersect. Get used to it.

These complaints are like complaining about a dripping tap when it is raining outside or you are living beside a waterfall. They only get on your nerves if you allow them.
I actually think it is a cool effect and makes the images stand out compared to the flat sharpe edged display of the older versions.

Thoroughly concur. And I suspect more recent users would probably complain if that 3D effect were suddenly to disappear!!! Personally, I rather like it... but realise I might be in a minority for that.... In fact I was personally rather surprised by how long this thread got on something I thought was both normal and nice!! But things appeared to get so wrought up that I started wondering if I had been mistaken about what was being complained about...

Considering that this shadow issue in no way effects an actual user created shadow I guess it's not really a problem, and certainly isn't one with respect to thumbs, which are just used to assist in selecting images. So it's a feature, not a bug? :-)

The complaints, however, aren't surprising. You have to consider that some people have been using some version of Paint Shop Pro for a decade or longer, not to mention a plethora of other graphic editing programs, all of which have traditionally presented images by default as flat, non-shadowed images in the workspace. So when people suddenly see what appears to be a drop shadow that they did not add to the image it should not be surprising that they are flummoxed by why this is happening. JMHO.

I am using X6 and hate the shadow. It interferes with cropping and using the rectangular selection tool.
Just hoping someone from Corel sees this.....
