How to interpret this?

Why does PSP 8 display this PNG file with a checker board background, yet show it as a single raster layer? For comparison, in IrfanView it looks like this:

Because it has transparency in it. Only raster layers can have transparency, the checkerboard is the transparent area, so it makes perfect sense. If it was a background layer and looked like that, then something would be screwey.

Does ifranview use white or black to display the transparency?

If you use "Merge all (flatten)" the transparency will go away.

White

So it does, thanks. I've always assumed that 'Merge' means 'Merge layers', so it's a revelation that you can use it when there's only one layer in the Layers window.
