Preview shows menu other than selected

Post by Ken Veal »

On preview in X7, a menu a menu shows that I have not selected. I will be burning a standard DVD.I used the burn DVD mpeg 2 option in share
1 Open rendered video file
2 Two clips show in media clip list so I delete the vsp file leaving the mpeg file
3 Use 1st clip as intro not selected
4 Select add/edit chapter, slide to wanted frame, click add chapter, 2nd clip now shows as 1st chapter
5 After clicking cog wheel, it confirms that project settings match - ok
6 Select name of file in Current displayed field
7 Select thumb nail menu from gallery-shows under menu + preview tab
8 Edit text
9 Add back ground music
When I review via the remote control a menu shows(one that I can’t see in the gallery) with “PRJ_20141028” in it as revolving text but has the image of the 1st clip of the project only in what looks like a screen hanging down from the ceiling. The name of the project swings in from the left on what looks like a wooden artists easel.
What am I doing wrong here

Hi Kenneth

If you have set Chapter points then you have created a Sub menu aka chapter menu

This has to be edited in the same way as editing the main menu.

From the Gallery / Edit pages look below the preview screen for Currently Displayed Menu, the drop down box defaults to the main menu, but there should be another menu page, the chapter menu/sub menu.
Edit that page in a similar way to the main menu.

Not with you re another menu page, with main menu in the Currently Displayed Menu field, I only see show highlight button and
1 add note menu 2 add decoration 3 add text 4 delete note menu greyed out.
With project name in the Currently Displayed Menu field I only see
3 and 3 with add note menu greyed out.
I only want one main menu to show on DVD insertion with one chapter, don’t understand the reason for having to edit chapter menu or how to do it. Have never had to do this before .I have gone back to the share tab again and selected a thumbnail menu.
In the menu and preview tab ,I see in the window the menu I selected with the edited text, the 1st clip of the project as the means of playing the whole video title The DVD and the selected frame for the means to play the 1st and only chapter with “chapter 1” text alongside it. (The project name is in the Currently Displayed Menu field.) This is what I want
When I preview , the same menu background shows but with the main title as PRJ_20141029 instead of the edited title and 2 identical clips playing the 1st seconds of the project with the project name text next to each one
Re “When I review via the remote control a menu shows (one that I can’t see in the gallery) which I referred to above – It is the 1st smart scene menu on the top left.

In step 1, you say you opened a rendered file. So how can you have 2 clips showing?

That is a question I can't answer. All I know is that 2 clips displayed in the media clip list, the 2nd one was a vsp file so I deleted it leaving the mpg file

Are you talking about what is shown on the timeline?

Hi Kenneth

The two clips I suspect you opened the burner module with your project open in the timeline, then added your Video File.
I assume you did render your project to a compliant Mpeg2 DVD.

From your image of the two clips, select the first then click the“i” , that will show the properties.
Can you tell us if one shows as a VSP
Is the file name being something like Pro\17.0\PRJ_CREATEDISC.VSPTEMP.vsp
The second clip should be a MPG file.

Can you start again.

1 / From the edit timelines – Start a New Project – nothing in the timelines.
2 / Share Create disc – DVD, this opens the burner module.
3 / Add media - Add Video – select your Mpeg2 DVD Compliant Video file, your file will show at the bottom of that window.
4 / Next – takes you to the Gallery / Edit panels.
5 / Choose a Thumbnail Menu _ edit that menu then preview.
Does that work for you.

OK

The setup above will show the main menu containing one thumbnail, this will play your movie from the beginning.

You mentioned Chapters --- (4) forth item in your first post.

Can you explain how you wish the movie will play.?
If you do wish to use Chapter points then we can discuss that option.

“I assume you did render your project to a compliant Mpeg2 DVD.”
I went share-mpeg2-disc-DVD tab shows with tick-clicked DVD-project loaded.
The 1st clip in the image is mpeg2 upper field 1st 1.06 GB 24bit 720x576 16:9 The 2nd clip has a file name akin to what you described as shown in the small text in the image text box
Anyway, I followed the workflow below , and it worked! Thank you Trevor
1 open new project - nothing in timeline
2 Share- mpeg 2-click on disc-DVD burner module opens
3 1 add media tab is active
4 Do not select “1sr clip as intro video”
5 Click add video files
6 Browse to video file. Click on the movie clip and open it
7 Mpeg file shows in media clip list
8 select thumbnail menu from gallery drop down arrow
9 choose and select one- shows in preview window
10 double click text and with box still around it , right click to raise attribute options box and choose colour and font, size etc
11 Click edit to add back ground music and video
12 Preview
I think part of my problem has been caused by the fact that I have started with the current finished project open and with its files in the time instead of opening a new project with nothing in the time line. I have decided not to have any chapters, will be happy to have just one menu “icon” at the start of the DVD. So the disc will play 100% by clicking the play button.

Do I understand correctly that there is no need to get involved with what menu, or if anything , is in the Currently Displayed Menu field.

Hi Kenneth

Its good that you have managed to create the disc.

Menu Structure

For each clip you see in the burner module (First Window) a thumbnail will be placed in the Main Menu.
You have added the one, so you have one thumbnail.
If you add two Mpeg2 DVD files then two links/thumbnails.

Next page
Below the preview screen is the option to choose “Currently Displayed Menus”, this will be empty as you have only one menu page, the Main Menu aka Title Menu.

If you were to use Chapter Menus, then that creates a Sub – Menu, a separate menu page.
The details below the preview screen will show the Main Menu -- but can be changed to the Chapter Menu, which should use the files name as its id.

I do not use Chapter Menus but prefer to split my movies into several smaller videos.
Adding then to the first page, I may have 4 videos at 15 minutes duration.
4 thumbnails on the menu.
Play the disc by choosing any thumbnail will play that video.

Thanks for that Trevor, splitting the movie with each having a menu thumbnail is a good idea!

Well you do need to create several smaller projects, then render each to a new video file.
Provided the total size is below 4.3 Gb they will fit to disc.

I also find it easier on the memory when working on smaller projects than one big project.

The navigation controls within the Options Cogwheel allows you to set how the disc plays the videos.
Basically—Play All
Play selected Video then back to menu, allowing you to select another video
Play selected Video to end of disc.

Or play all forever, repeats the disc over and over, I don’t use that option.
